Problem using AVI files

Hello
First post as brand new user of Vegas MS 8 Plat.
Have files on pc downloaded from my Samsung camcorder. Files look to be in AVI format, but when trying to use in Vegas it only appears to put audio track onto timeline but won't let me drag video element. Message at bottom of explorer part of screen says 'Video: Stream attributes could not be determined'
I have asked technical support but have not had reply yet. Tried with sample video clip from my Vista HP earlier and that appeared to work fine.
Any help gratefully received.
Thanks
Andy

This is a very old issue.

You are missing an avi codec.

Search this forum for avi etc. and you will find earlier discussions on this topic like: http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/forums/ShowMessage.asp?MessageID=601229&Replies=7

Normally a paid for and registered version of VMSP 8 upgraded to version 8d should be able handle most avi's - but as you see avi's are many things dependant on the camera - else possibly try the Morgan codec at www.morgan-multimedia.com they have a trial so you can see if it works in your case before you pay anything.

If this does not help use the Gspot program (Google it) to find out what you need.

I also have a Samsung camcorder (SCD-365). I had the same problem. Although they look like ".avi" files, they are really Samsung's version of ".mpeg-4 files (the video files stored on the Memory Stick)". A Forum user, Eugenia, solved the problem for me. Go to the following message thread:

I hope this solves your problem, too. It was free!
