Problem using .wav files of different resolutions

Vegas 5 user here. I have a project with many audio tracks recorded at 48kHz, 24 bit. This is the project file setting. I imported a new .wav file into the project, but that one was 44.1kHz, 16 bit.

I dragged the new 44.1/16 file from the Media Pool to the timeline to create a new track with the new file's event. Pretty simple stuff that I know I've done millions of times. However, when I played the project, the 16 bit file sounded crackled or slightly gapped. It sounded like a low bit rate "sizzle." However, when I opened the 44.1/16 file in the Trimmer, selected all of the content and dragged the selection to the timeline, the new file sounded fine.

Anyone have any ideas about why this is occurring? I shouldn't have to do the Trimmer step, should I?

If it helps to understand, recently I found that recording directly into SoundForge at 44.1/16 makes the same noise upon playback. If I record 48kHz 24 in SoundForge, it sounds fine.

I haven't changed any hardware or hardware configurations.

Sounds like a problem with 16/44k1 from your soundcard (driver update ?) ! What's it like playing back a track extracted from a CD ?

I thought that too, but playing back ripped CDs works fine. Even when I played the new 44.1/16 file in Windows Media Player it sounded fine. The problem was in Vegas until I did that Trimmer step.

Sorry about the mess above - having trouble posting.

I still think there is something wrong with your soundcard driver, or something wrong with the way both Sony app talk to it. Can't understand what the Trimmer thing is, as it does not alter the source media at all !

Maybe there is a shared library file (either Sony or MS) corrupted. Try uninstalling all your Sony apps, rebooting, and re-insatlling.
