Problem with borderFX on a Cropped videoscene

Hey guys, i have a huge problem with my Vegas Pro 19.

I edited my whole Video Cinema-like with Black borders at the top and bottom of my Video with the "Pan/Crop" function..

now i want to add a soft edge border to some scenes of my cropped Video but the Soft-edge is only visible on the right and left side of the video. The problem is, the soft BorderFX dosnt change its shape when i crop the scene to another aspect ratio.

So Top and Bottom isnt affected by the soft edge border because of the use of Pan/Crop

My Vegas Pro 18 works well but i dont find the right solution for my version Pro 19.

i added 2 Youtube-videos to show my Problem.

Appears to be working for me in 19. Are all the settings the same in both?

TheHighFPS wrote on 12/3/2021, 9:55 AM

Hi Jetdv, thanks for your fast reply.

The problem appears when you change the aspect ratio of the visible footage.

you can test it, when you dragging the top part down by holding the ctrl button. then the aspect ratio changes and black borders at top and bottom appears, because the cropped footage and the project itself havent the same aspect ratio anymore.

The Border wiill apply on the blue line, not on the purple one.

like i showed in my Video, in Vegas 18 it works perfect, when i apply the borderFX it will fit into the cropped size (purple section)

@TheHighFPS I too am experiencing what you demonstrated for VP19.

Also, when I turn on and off the Border (clicking the little on/off box in the chain), the video gets progressively darker, and all I am doing is turning the Border on and off.

Hi, not a 'fix' but adding either Picture in Picture or Deform seems to work

Edit - hmm but you can't crop it before adding Picture in Picture & maintain the feathering.

jetdv wrote on 12/3/2021, 12:44 PM

Seems to still be working just fine. I had unchecked the "Lock Aspect Ratio" box before my first test but this time I left it checked and held down the CTRL key when resizing. It worked fine for me both ways.

Are you on the newest build?

Former user wrote on 12/3/2021, 12:49 PM

@jetdv what about when you un-tick Stretch to fill frame ?

jetdv wrote on 12/3/2021, 12:56 PM

@Former user, turning off "Stretch to fill frame" I do see the same thing.

Former user wrote on 12/3/2021, 1:12 PM

@jetdv sorry I was getting a bit mixed up but on @TheHighFPS video it shows this feathering on the bottom & top when in 18 -

But in 19, whatever i do, Lock Aspect ratio, Stretch to fill frame or change Pan/crop - Border order I get this, i think that it what they're getting at.

jetdv wrote on 12/3/2021, 2:00 PM

@Former user, looking at the OP's videos, "Stretch to Fill Frame" is turned on on both of his examples. With that turned on, it works fine in both versions for me. With it turned off, it does not work in either version. That actually makes sense to me. But both 18 and 19 are working exactly the same way.

Former user wrote on 12/3/2021, 3:29 PM

@jetdv In the first video in 18 no he doesn't turn Stretch to Fill Frame on but does in the second,

But that doesn't matter, like i say i was getting confused, he's trying many options, so ignore that Stretch to Fill Frame.

So in 19 you can recreate this from his vid in 18, you can shrink the selection top & bottom & the feathered border follows?

This is my version of the pic above,

With Stretch to Fill Frame turned on... yes, it is working fine.

Former user wrote on 12/4/2021, 8:20 AM

@jetdv hmm interesting, I did say in my last comment 'ignore that Stretch to Fill Frame' but anyway exactly the same settings on my screen but no feathering top n bottom

I don't know what to make of it, but there is a there there. Watch what happens when the size of the border is adjusted.

Vegas 19-424

Vegas 18-527

Edit: Replaced both videos for brevity and to show that once the border has increased to obscure most of the screen, in Vegas Pro 19-424 the screen stays black with changes in the slider, while Vegas 18 recovers.

Reyfox wrote on 12/4/2021, 3:30 PM

@john_dennis yep! That's it! Now...where do you add a bug report? Excellent work!

wtf hoooow? xD i dont understand i need this so badly

i think stretch to full frame dosnt matter, but it must be exist any solution for this, any option but idont find the right option. In my google search i found 2 things that dosnt helped me, first thing was stretch to full frame.

because you can have a similar looking problem when you turn this off, but in my example it is turned on.

the second thing was adding border before crop, then you have a wrong order in the chain and the border dosnt work, but i fixed it without getting the right solution, in my examples the oan/crop is the very first in the row, and after that i added border, like it should be. but for me it still does not work.

"... but I don't find the right option."

If the code is actually  broken, there may not be an option that works for you. The Vegas development team is the final arbiter of that. When "i need this so badly", I usually do it in Vegas 18, 17, 15, 14, 13, 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, or 4. I ignored 16.

I prefer to add solid color black on top and add inverted mask via pan & crop tools.

with this way, I still able to readjust the video position in easier way.

@TheHighFPS Yeah, i still don't know, 🤷‍♂️ & to the other's who've suggested 'options', there's always another way of doing stuff & i'm sure thanks are given but to find a work-around isn't the point of this post.

@TheHighFPS

This is my last comment on this subject until I hear something from the Vegas development team.

Here is a workaround that will work in any version of Vegas.

  • Note the pixel dimensions of the Pan/Crop box(s) in your Vegas project.
  • In Photoshop (or your favorite photo editor) create a black mask at your project pixel dimensions.
  • Using the Feather option applied to the selection tools in Photoshop to create the blur effect that you desire by cutting your selection to a transparent background.
  • Save as .PNG with transparency.
  • In Vegas, place your mask on a track above you video.

Here is a starter mask to give you the idea.

the bad thing is, i dont need only the raw FX effect, i need all settings and animations of it because my editing is something far deeper and a thousand times more savage ^^

i show you what happens to my project i transfered to Vegas Pro version 19 build 424.

first i build this project in Vegas Pro Version 18

look at second 26, there i added an animated border effect syncroniced with the soundeffects of an ancient big bang and pictured with some creepy image disorder effects.to give the viewer a feeling of anxiety.

after i opened the same project in Vegas Pro 19 build 424, i just switched the audiofile, but the effect at second 26 isnt the same anymore, the bordereffects dosnt work as intendent anymore.

after i noticed this, i opened a completly new project and tested the bordereffect on other clips, the same problem appears, so it shouldnt be an converting bug or something.

My Vegas Pro 18 works well but i dont find the right solution for my version Pro 19.

i added 2 Youtube-videos to show my Problem.

We added the GPU acceleration for the Borders FX in VP19 and reproduced now the issue in combination with "Pan/Crop". Could you deactivate the GPU acceleration in the preferences and check the expected behaviour? If the workarround is working I will create a detailed bug report. Thanks for your report.

@VEGASPascal Hi, GPU-OFF, with Stretch to fill frame ON, i get the feathering following 👍

But with Stretch to fill frame OFF it doesn't follow, nor if i switch the Size - Border tabs around

jetdv wrote on 12/6/2021, 8:57 AM

My GPU Acceleration is "OFF".
