Just bought Vegas 4.0 after struggling with a bunch of other NLE tools over the years. I have about 50 DV tapes to go through and the media management features in vegas would be a big help. My thinking is to have one sfvidcap file to organize all clips from my tapes (most would be offline for storage reasons) and to use the capture comment field to store detail for each clip--perhaps subdivide the comment field text as "event | subject | persons".
The problem I've run into with adding comments in the capture tool has something to do with file access limitations. When adding a comment (via the clip properties dialog) I get the following error dialog if I try to apply the comment while previewing the clip: "An error occurred during the current operation. The file could not be opened. Make sure the file exists and that you have access to the file/folder."
I can work around this bug by not previewing the clip I'm trying to add comments about (slight annoyance). The bigger concern is that when this error occurs any user modified clip property data is not propagated over to the vegas application's clip properties. There is the potential then that user data is out of sync between the capture tool and the media pool in the vegas application. I haven't discovered any way to refresh the vegas media pool data without re-editing clip properties in the capture tool.
Has anyone else stubbed their toes on this? Perhaps there is a simple fix or a better way to refresh data stored in the clip explorer of the capture tool? Or maybe there is a completely different "path" to manage clip data.
I think the workaround for now is to:
1. Never modify clip properties while previewing the clip in the capture tool (e.g., select clip 2 while modifying clip 1).
2. Close the Vegas application while working with clip properties in the capture tool (another file access conflict?).
3. Manually compare clip properties stored in the sfvidcap (video capture project) and the veg (vegas application project).
Thanks for your help,
Rory
