Problem with creating masks/keyframes

I am obviously very new at creating masks and have a weird problem.

I have created a mask starting at about 57 seconds into my clip. That is where the first keyframe is located. I create my mask, but the effect and masking area I have applied is appearing BEFORE the first keyframe. I don't understand why this is. Thanks for any help or suggestions!

that's because it's inbetweening from the FIRST keyframe to the first one you made. There's one @ the start.

I think if you right click on the first one (or the first one you made) & select "hold". that should solve your problem (hold tells it not to do inbetweening, but I forget if it's before or after the key).

Ok, I set the one at the start to "hold" but the very first frame is pixelated (the effect I'm using) then it's fine after that point until the next keyframe.

If you want both the FX and mask to both start at the 57 sec. mark, insert another Hold keyframe(s) one frame before that (i.e. at 56:29) in both the Pan/Crop and FX keyframe timelines.
Then insert one more keyframe(s) at the 57 sec. mark and change it/them to Linear, Fast, etc.
Add more keyframes as required.
