Problem with jpg images in timeline

Hello,

My system info is:
Gateway Windows 7 64 Bit
intel i7 2.8 ghz
16gb ram
1gb dedicated video card

I am using the 64 bit version of Vegas Pro. When I am importing jpg pictures, I encounter 3 different problems.

I should start by saying all the jpgs import into the project media area with no problems. The problems occur when the pictures are placed in the timeline.

1) When I place the jpg into the timeline, the image where the picture should be is simply a red block. This does not happen with all pictures. The picture may or may not appear in the preview screen.

2) After being placed in the timeline, some pictures do not appear in the preview screen. The playback is simply a black screen.

3) When overlaying pictures onto pictures (for example, 29 frame overlay) or pictures onto video, instead of a fade from one to the other, the first image(video or picture) goes to black at the end of it's place in the timeline, then the second image fades in from the black.

I would appreciate any assistance anyone may have to offer.

Thank you

This is just a guess, but are these jpg images from someone using a Mac? They might be CMYK and could have an embedded color profile that can cause problems -- not just with Vegas, but many PC based applications.

They are from a Hitachi HD Camcorder transferred directly to the computer from a SD card.

But if there is a compatibility issue, is there a program that could convert the images to work properly with Vegas?

Hi Lazy Leg (love the handle),

I've had similar problems with a similar rig and v9.0c, but also with video assets too. 9.0c seems to be getting a reputation for memory problems with HD projects.

How complex/long is your project?

And how big are these files? In res and Kb?

I believe the "red asset" is Vegas's way of saying it doesn't have enough memory to display the asset, and a black screen will result on preview or render.

I have always found this to be curious when there is tons of memory.

I get both of these symptoms daily on complex projects with the current 64 bit version.

I'd also give the other response above some though too - it could be incompatible source material. The question is: does the same image always cause the problem? If it changes between loads, then there is nothing wrong with the source file - its a memory issue.

There is a known problem with 9.0c 64 bit and JPEG's or even PNG's .. Sony says it occurs when using AVCHD and JPEG's on the same timeline -- but others say it is a wider issue. I use jpeg's in most of my projects so I am using 9.0c 32 bit (runs fine for me) and 9.0b 64 bit for longer renders to speed things up.

try converting them to png - apparently vegas's favourite format for stills....

I have tried converting them to png, but the same problem exists.

--- How complex/long is your project?

I'm not certain what would be considered complex, but there are a lot of short video clips from 4 to 8 seconds long. Quite a few overlays, only a couple of transitions, some background music. The project is about 5 mins in length to this point. However, I tried starting a new project just using 5 jpg/png images and I got the same results.

--- And how big are these files? In res and Kb?

I started with 2880 x 1620 averaging around 2mb per picture (the png are 5x bigger in file size). I'm doing some panning and zooming, so I wanted the higher resolution to keep the quality. I'm rendering to AVCHD.

I thought that might have been the problem, so I converted them to 1920 x 1080, but I still have the same issues.

It's actually a little bizarre, because I started with Vegas Platinum 9 but had so many issues with rendering that I'm using the Pro version now. The Platinum version has no issues with the jpgs in the timeline. Until I can find a solution to this problem, I am actually doing all the panning and zooming in Platinum and rendering them into m2ts then importing into Pro. However, I would rather be able to do it all in Pro.

--- The question is: does the same image always cause the problem? If it changes between loads, then there is nothing wrong with the source file - its a memory issue.

It does change. Sometimes it works perfectly, then the next try it does one of the three issues at the beginning of this thread.

I'm not clear on the memory issue. Is there something I could be doing to correct this?

--- I use jpeg's in most of my projects so I am using 9.0c 32 bit (runs fine for me) and 9.0b 64 bit for longer renders to speed things up.

So the 9.0b 64 bit works perfectly? If so, where would I find it to download?

Thanks for all your help. Its appreciated.

Sony's response from the Jpg, png black in preview and rendering thread:

This is a known issue that occurs when combining AVCHD and certain still images on the timeline, and we're working to correct it. We apologize for the inconvenience.

In the meantime, workarounds include:
-Rendering still images to a video format (such as AVI)
-Rendering AVCHD footage to an intermediate format (such as AVI)
-Working in 9.0b

So the 9.0b 64 bit works perfectly? If so, where would I find it to download?
