Problem with .mov files

david-murray wrote on 7/2/2015, 11:14 PM
When I try to add a .mov file to the timeline in Vegas 12 or Vegas 9, I get an error message telling me I need to install Quicktime. Quicktime IS installed. I did a fresh install of the latest version of Quicktime 7.7.7, and I STILL get the same message.

Windows Media Player will play the files. Vegas is built to handle just about everything you throw at it, so what's the deal with .mov files? Is there some feud between Sony and Apple, or is it just my system?

I'm running Windows 7, 64-bit. The .mov files I was trying to edit tonight were shot on an iPhone 4. I've always had issues trying to edit .mov sources. I usually end up having to use some cheap or free software to convert it to another format. It makes no sense to me that a program I have invested hundreds of dollars in over the years can't deal with something this basic.

Apple must of done an update within a couple days because last week I had my son's iPod footage on my Vegas 10 TL w/o issue, this week it said I needed to install Quicktime. I reinstalled Quicktime Alternative and they work again. The iTunes on my machine didn't update and I don't have Apple's QT installed, the only change would be the iPod.

Why should Sony spend $$$$ to accommodate another company's product?

Are you going to bad-mouth Apple for not accommodating Sony? Do you think they care?

That could be it.

As I said, both Vegas 9 and Vegas 12 said update Quicktime to at least Quicktime 7. I did, but neither version will play it in the Explorer view or let me add the file to the timeline. I also tried changing the extension name to mp4. That has worked sometimes in the past, but not for this file.

i wrote elsewhere that i used sony's catalyst prepare with some aic (apple intermediary codec) .mov files.

well, it worked for short clips but cr*pped out on longer ones.

frankly i'm really beginning to despise anything connected with apple - such an incredibly self-centered mind set....

from now on i'm simply going to refuse any .mov files. fortunately i'm in a position to do so, but if i wasn't the first thing i'd do (and regularly used to do before this aic project) was transcode them to a vegas friendly mxf or mp4.

alternatively, ask them to supply dnxhd if coming from an editing system.

btw. this ISN'T sony's problem. you wanna yell at someone, do so at apple...

I'm not yelling at anyone. I'm just trying to figure out the best way to make it work.

As I said before, Windows Media Player has no problem playing the same file on the same computer. When .mov plays on Microsoft's applications, and Microsoft is Apple's biggest competitor, I'm just having some difficultly understanding why a pro-grade video editing program like Vegas can't handle it.

I've been using Vegas since it first came out. A friend was using Premiere, and I saw how much easier it was to push two clips together in Vegas for a crossfade.

My dad got a powerbook (laptop, right?). He was told he could do all his stuff in iMovie, no need for FCP for what he does.

Except...

iMovie won't read any of his video file so he STILL uses a windows machine & Vegas to convert his stuff to use in iMovie. :)

Good news. I reinstalled the latest versions of Vegas 9.0 (9.0e) and Vegas 12 (build 770), and I can now edit .mov format in either one.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

My theory is this. When Apple updated Quicktime a few months ago, it made something go wonky. Updating Quicktime again last week did nothing to fix it, but the reinstall of both versions of Vegas set it back right.

Like I said...just a theory. I really have no idea, but I'm glad it finally works. If you have recently updated Quicktime and find you can't edit .mov files, reinstalling the latest version of Vegas AGAIN might fix it.

The reason it now works is that it appears that Vegas registers the version of QuickTime installed. if you upgrade Vegas only sees the old version. I install QuickTime first then Vegas. Also, you need to uninstall QuickTime completely the reinstall new version.. that works too. BUT:I convert MOV's to AVI. It solves so many problems.

From an earlier post of mine, on this forum: "I had a number of issues with similar files and Vegas. All of my problems went away when I installed the Quicktime Alternative (after removing Quicktime).
