Problem with Nesting

Barry W. Hull wrote on 2/5/2013, 8:08 AM
Using Vegas 12, never had this problem before. I am able to open projects, no problem. However, every time I nest a project on the timeline, no matter how complicated or simple the project, Vegas now hangs up, the spinning circle.

I simply drag a project onto the timeline, Vegas hangs up, every time.

I've gone so far as to uninstall and reinstall Vegas, all the plugins, rebooted, turned off and on GPU acceleration, etc., grasping at straws here. Have never had any serious issues with Vegas and this seemed to appear out of the blue, but I really need to solve this issue.

Any suggestions?

Some have reported that with nested projects Vegas would try to open earlier versions of Vegas.

Did you have an earlier version of Vegas that you uninstalled? If so, Vegas might be looking for it and get locked up not finding it.

Was anything else uninstalled and/or updated? Sometimes auto-updates can cause problems to all of a sudden happen.

I turn off auto-updates and when I am notified of updates, I backup (clone) my system first and then do the updates. If you have auto-updates enabled on anything, turn them off.

I've certainly had crashes with nested projects, but eventually I get them to load. When Vegas imports another Vegas file (as nested) it creates an sfap0 file in the nested file's folder. Are these being created?

I know from experience that once Vegas crashes while creating these files (and creates an sfap0 file with 0 KB in it) that Vegas will fail to nest that file (essentially it can't seem to overwrite the sfap0 file). If you find these sfap0 files, try deleting them and then re-nesting your file.

Thanks for those suggestions, although it turns out the issue is much worse than simply nested files. Now any file dragged onto the timeline causes issues, on the phone couple of hours with tech support, they were sharp. Will do a manual uninstall, getting rid of everything, then a reinstall, hope that works.

Odd how I never had an issue with Vegas whatsoever, something happened, now it is dead in the water.

My IT guy did a thorough going over my computer, everything else in tip top shape, no issues, all software except Vegas working AOK.

BUT, on the bright side, going to purchase a computer for nothing except Vegas, leaving all other business work on another machine, don't need the stress.

Curious to know, first project test with only Text generated media, put to 2nd project, no issue

Get back to first again, add audio, and re-add again, crash - can't send report.
Thinking to recreate again, unrepeatable...

will come back later if I find something else...

I tried every combo I could imagine, from "opening" projects to "nesting" projects, dragging videos, graphics, titles, and all sorts of combos of each in all sorts of different orders. The crashes were entirely random, never occuring at the same time, but once it started, the software crashed within 60 seconds every time.

When I say crash, I specifically mean (not responding), and had to End Process, although now that I think about it, a few times it crashed giving me the option to send a report to Sony, but that was rare.

Normally I would not even respond until I had this sorted out, but my misery enjoys your company, for whatever that is worth, half way through the tedious total delete and reinstall.

As a point of consideration for those who might be having difficulty with Vegas 12;

After a complete manual deletion of Vegas, all files and registry, and deleting every bit of software I have installed within the last couple of months, then reinstalling, it still would not work.

So I reverted back to v394, son of a gun, it worked. I decided to upgrade back to 486, after deleting a few more months worth of C++ files, failed again, so back to v394 which is where I will leave it, which is ridiculous. I miss the improved 486.

Take me out of the Vegas never had an issue camp, put me in the what the heck is going on camp.
