Problem with video preview in 3.0 beta

When I try to preview a video clip in the new VV 3.0 beta, it will play the first few frames and then stop,
wait a few seconds and then play a few more frames and stop, wait a few seconds and play a few more frames. If I take that same clip into the timeline it plays back normally. If I open the same clip in VV2.0 to preview it also plays back normally. Why does the preview in VV3.0 not work properly?

Intel PII? Is that what you have?

also, what kind of clip is this that you are previewing?

I'm experiencing the same problem. I have a P4 1.4 Ghz, 384 MB RAM and a 7200 RPM harddrive. The video clip I'm trying to preview is a DV clip I captured using VV 3.0 beta.

I am using a PIII 1Ghz/512MB/ASUS CULS2-C/WinXP. This occurs while trying to preview either .avi or .mov files. These same files playback fine when inserted into the timeline. They also playback normally in VV 2.0h(timeline & preview). It is only when trying to preview in VV 3.0 beta that I get the start and stop every few frames.

By the way, the clips I am trying to preview are the standard DV (720x480x32,29.97) type for NTSC video.
This happens with both .avi and .mov files.

I think I found the problem. Unlike VV 2.0, VV 3.0 beta will not allow you to properly preview video files that are not at the same audio rate as the Project properties stated audio rate. Once I changed the audio rate from my default of 44.1k to 32k(video files audio rate) they played back fine. When I returned the Project properties audio rate back to 44.1, the video files would not play back properly.
Is there a way to get video files to preview(regardless of audio rate) like in VV 2.0 without it having to match the project default rate?

I suspect the problem may be with the sound card settings or limitations -- probably is. I hope it is. I haven't tested it (I need to get back to the tutorial) but my symptoms depend on bit depth setting, rather than sample rate. Also for me the timeline also stutters -- plays just 3 or 4 frames and loops endlessly -- just like previews. I'm glad I found this clue cause I spent a good couple hours fruitlessly trying to fix it. (Don't want to be fruitless.) How do I ignore myself? Just push this button here . . .

Followup -- the problem was running an Audigy in 24-bit record. Goes away with 16 bit setting.
