Problem with WMP after Updates

Yesterday I downloaded and installed these updates: Vegas Video 3.0c and Sound Forge 6.0b. I made NO other changes to my system.

Today, when I try to play MPG video files from the Internet (my default player is Windows Media Player) WMP either opens and then crashes or opens fullscreen within Internet Explorer and crashes.

I thought it might be some corruption of WMP, so I installed the WMP Beta 9. I get the same errors.

I made Real Player the default for MPGs, and I was able to play back the videos with no problem.

Any ideas?

This is a serious problem for me, as I am a developer, and I use WMP and MPG files all the time.

I just purchased and installed VV 3.0c and have exactly the same problem. Aditional info: the same mpeg file that breaks via internet streaming download, will work fine if downloaded first.

It's extremely frustrating and I've spent a good few hours researching and trying various things to no avail.

If you, or anyone else has had the problem and found a solution, I'd appreciate the info!

Sounds like a problem related to the Main Concept MPEG Directshow decoder. Vegas doesn't use this but WMP and other Dshow MPEG apps do. I've talked to MC about this and they are going to provide a utility at some point to do what I am about to describe, so for now try this:

find the files "mcdsmpeg.ax" and "mcspmpeg.ax"

rename them to: "mcdsmpeg.ax.hide" and ""mcspmpeg.ax.hide"

(rename them back to the original name if you run into any other trouble)

Close/restart wmp - any better? TMPEG users who are running into problems opening MPEGs should also try this. Please post results!

Thanks for the quick reply! I'm heading on a busines trip tomorrow morning, and still need to pack, so I won't be experimenting on this until I get back on Sunday night or Monday.

After reading other notes on this forum, I had already tried renaming those two files, and rebooted afterwards for good measure. The problem didn't go away. I then spent quite some time looking for codecs on the web to experiment with, with no effect. I went as far as downloading and installing WMP 9 beta to see if anything would get replaced/cleaned up. Nope. Same problem. Then, since it's a fresh VV install, I decided to uninstall it, and that cleared up the problem. Obviously another solution will have to be found ;-)

System details:
PIII 1GHz, 512 ram, Win2K with all service packs, etc. Plenty of hard disk space, ATI Radeon All-in-wonder video, Norton antivirus (tried disabling with no effect), and plenty of other programs installed.

I do have Divx decoder(s) installed, however when loading sample videos from the hard drive (while VV was loaded) and selecting properties, it showed other codecs being used. Same for after VV removal. It just seems odd to me that the same local downloaded files would work fine, while streaming them from the Internet fails (App Error, addressing address 0x00000000 -- forget the exact message)..

Any other ideas, or things to try when I'm back from the trip?
