Problems after 7.0e upgrade

michael-wildermuth wrote on 6/14/2007, 6:59 PM
I just upgraded from Vegas 6.0d to 7.0 and then to 7.0e. I have the following problems and wonder if any of you could furnish some advice:

1) When I have multiple windows open and switch from Vegas to another window and then back to Vegas, Vegas takes several seconds to "wake up". I get the hour glass and there is some acitivity according to Windows Task Manager but I can't do anything for about 25 seconds. It is annoying and unproductive. If I have a new project with no video on the timeline, this does not happen. Is Vegas re-rendering something or re-converting something?

2) Video that I used without problem in Vegas 6.0 is now somehow compromised. Interestingly, a project that I was working on earlier with 6.0 (everything fine) shows a problem in 7.0, i.e. the last couple of seconds of a sub-clip is gone. This change is apparent not only in Vegas but even in Windows Media Player. And, it is apparent on my backup copies as well.

I originally imported the video from a mini-DVD created on my Sony DCR-DVD403 using the Import from DVD Camcorder Disc function. So I went back to the original disc and played it with PowerDVD. No problems. It played properly and the last two seconds were there. I then re-imported the files using the Import DVD Camcorder Disc function in Vegas and, once on my hard drive, the last two seconds are missing again.

I would appreciate any assistance very much.

My 7.0E does the same thing on using the DVD import, cuts off the last frame or frames of sound on each VOB file.

Additional issues with 7.0e:

3) Opening a 6.0 project that had some chroma key sgments reveals that the chroma key effects no longer show up as a video event fx. Yet, the segments still play showing the chroma key. Additionally, but not consistently, when rendered, the chroma key area did not render properly but came out entirely black.

4) 7.0e has crashed with an exception on three occasions.

When upgrading, I put on the 7.0 upgrade, then the 7.0e upgrade, and then removed 6.0. Is this not the recommended procedure?

Are others having problems with 7.0e?

Thanks for any assistance from anyone.

I can help you with the switching windows delay. When Vegas loses focus, it takes all of the media offline (closes the files), when it regains focus, it brings the media back online (re-opens the files). You can change this behavior in the Vegas preferences.

Thanks, Scott. You were right.

I just don't recall this as much of an issue before the upgrade but it certainly was afterward. Changing the preferences removed this as an issue for me.

Thanks again.

I downloaded VOB2MPG and ran it on the files on my original mini-DVD disc from my DCR-DVD403. I played the resulting files in Windows Media Player and they seemed to play correctly the first time. However, I then dragged the cursor near the end to replay the last few seconds and got a lot of unusual behavior, i.e. delays, termination before the end of the clip, audio dropouts, skipped portions.

Since this did not even involve Vegas, I am wondering where to go looking for a solution. Does it seem the camcorder is not finalizing the disc properly?

I also opened the files with Vegas and had several odd issues.

I opened the files with Real Player and got similar issues.

I then played the original mini-DVD with PowerDVD and encountered no problems.

I then played the original mini-DVD with Windows Media Player and encountered no problems.

When I drag the VOB files from the disc into Vegas, I only get a portion of the files, about 25 seconds each from the beginning of two files. The files are about 288 meg and 1 gig.

So, in summary, it seems as though I can play the original VOB files properly but cannot get them converted to a completely usable MPEG format with either Vegas or VOB2MPG.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

JJK:

Have you heard any more about your problem with the converted VOB files? What is your source? Did they come from a DCR-DVD403 as well?

I did not have this problem before. I only noticed it after upgrading to 7 from 6.0d. It is possible that a Windows update or something else has caused the problem as Vegas is not the only thing I have upgraded in the interim.

I do not do this full time. I have projects that worked fine last year. I created DVDs from them and everything was fine. Now those same projects have problems and the problems show up when attempting to play the files with Windows Media Player too. This is all after the upgrade.

Any more information from anyone would be appreciated.

Continuing on...

I downloaded a copy of Super © from eRightSoft onto my system.

I tried to play the problem files with Super © and had no problems whatsoever.

That leads me to believe that the problem is not with the files (which I had already believed since they previously played without trouble) but with the codecs on my system since eRightSoft say that Super © contains its own codecs.

Any advice on where to go from here?

One more thing. I installed a new version of Flash on my system aroudn the same time I was upgrading to Vegas 7.0e.

Any assistance is appreciated.

Part 1 may be an indication of too little RAM and/or too many open apps. When these conditions occur, switching focus to another app may take Vegas out of RAM and to the paging file. When you return to Vegas, it has to load RAM back from the paging file before you can use it. Depending on your local storage subsystem this may take more or less time since there may be considerable hard disc activity. Also, paging files do get fragmented, slowing down this operation. They don't get defragmented using the conventional tools, you have to use a paging file defragmenter specifically to accomplish this.

And on...

I downloaded GSpot. What a wonderful utility!

It shows problems with my codecs, specifically with my MPEG-2 codecs which is what I expected to see. The problems are mostly with Pixella stuff that was installed on my system with the software that came from my Sony camcoder and a couple of Sony cameras that I bought.

I removed the software a long time ago after having problems with it but it appears that the removal was not completely successful.

Next question, what is the best way to correct the problems being shown, i.e. "**File missing". Would a registry cleaner take care of it?

Thanks, baysidebas.

I have made alterations to my paging file in recent weeks. Your suggestion makes sense to me. May I ask what utility you use to defragment your paging file?
JJKizak wrote on 6/22/2007, 9:25 AM
The source is any disc that I have burned (DVD-A 4.0B) using Plextor 716A burner and/or burned with Nero. I have 4 gig of ram, AMD 4600 X2, XP PRO.with all updates including Media player 11 and IE7.

If you make your paging file static, it won't ever frag. Set the min and max to the same size.
baysidebas wrote on 6/22/2007, 5:36 PM
Unless you do this when originally setting up Windows on a scrubbed drive, you'll just freeze the current state of fragmentation.

Thanks for the comments; they are appreciated.

As I continue on, my problems all seem to be related to the DIRECTX component mpg2splt.ax

DirectX was updated on my system recently although the information on mpg2splt.ax shows it to be a file that has not been updated recently. I tried re-registering the file but that made no difference. I am thinking of re-installing DirectX 9.0c.

Does anyone else have a similar story or experince they could share?

I am also considering purchasing Reg Organizer and seeing what cleaning my registry would do. I know I have errors because GSpot has pointed them out to me. GSpot indicates that mpg2splt.ax is not interacting with my Nero components as well:

(Src)-->>--(A)-->[MPEG-2Splitter ]>--(B)-->[Nero Video Decoder ]>--(C)-->[VFW:Helix YV12 YUV Codec ]>--(D)-->[Video Renderer ]

Thanks for any assistance or information.

Problem resolved.

I attempted to install DirectX 9.0c again on my system but I could not do it. The install would just stop while attempting the download and tell me to try again or check my internet connection.

I called Microsoft, who were very helpful. I learned that Windows Media Player 11 should not be installed on my system (Windows XP Media Center Edition 2002) because of incompatibilities; it was the automatic update utility from Microsoft that installed WMP 11 on my system in the first place! We uninstalled WMP 11 and went back to WMP 10. The problems remained. By the way, the update utility immediately tried to upgrade me to WMP 11!

We installed the K-Lite Codec Pack. I was interested to learn that Microsoft use it themselves to resolve such problems. The problem remained.

I was escalated to the next level of support but was curious about the K-Lite install. The Microsoft tech chose all the default options when he installed it. While waiting for the next level of support to call me back, I re-did the K-Lite Codec Pack install again and looked through all the installation options. I was curious to discover that the default installation options bypassed the MPEG codecs by and large, especially MPEG-2, and so I altered the options to include the MPEG codecs and filters and proceeded. The problem was resolved.

The K-Lite Codec Pack also removed a bunch of junk from the Sony Pixella software which had been a thorn in my side since I installed it a year and a half ago, as well as other bad entries in the registry. I was very pleased that the K-Lite install, after choosing the right options, resolved my problems and left my system cleaner.

Now, all I have to do is re-install all my Sony Media Software which I uninstalled based on advice from Sony Creative Software support who thought my problem may have been caused by recent uninstalls of older versions.

That leads me to one more question: do you uninstall older versions of Vegas, Sound Forge, etc. once you upgrade or do you leave them on your system?

Thanks again for the assistance.

Well, actually, I continue to learn more.

It turns out that I have Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 with Update Rollup 2. System properties shows 2002 but, apparently, that is because that (2002) is the actual version of XP on my system and Media Center Edition is really just an add-on. I have to go into Media Center > Settings > General > About Media Center > Software Version to see the actual version of Windows XP Media Center actually installed.

That means that Windows Media Player should work on my system. Perhaps WMP 11 was not the origin of the problem. Perhaps it was the uninstall or install of one or the other of my Sony Media Software.

We'll see. I intend to install WMP 11 again and go from there.
michael-wildermuth wrote on 7/4/2007, 12:52 PM
I installed WMP 11 again and Nero again and then all the Sony Creative Software again and everything seems to be fine now.

Before all this I used Reg Organizer to clean up my registry. The K-Lite Codec Pack install also resolved issues with my codecs as I explained before.

I would put forward good recommendations for both the K-Lite Codec Pack and for Reg Organizer.
