Problems running under Windows XP Pro?

I upgraded to Windows XP Pro (Service Pack 2 with all the latest service packs) this past week from Windows 2000. I just tried running Vegas 5.0d and am encountering problems that I did not have in Windows 2000.

At first, Vegas took forever to load, appearing as if it was hung. I disabled MSN Messenger as I never use it and now Vegas loads just fine. However, when I try to render a movie, the application does hang. I put just a simple picture on the timeline, then click on Render As. The hour glass appears and nothing happens after that, no other window pops up or anything. I disabled the Windows Firewall, and still have the same problem. At times, I can not even bring up the Task Manager in order to terminate the application.

Has anyone else experienced this or have any suggestions? My old copy of Movie Studio works just fine and can render without problems in Windows XP Pro.

Upgrading from an earlier version of Windows since win98 SE have not gone well. A clean install is always the best. I speculate that you are running into Windows problems, not Vegas problems.

Save your Vegas settings, data, etc. first.

It was a clean XP install, not an upgrade. The hard drive was reformatted during the install.

I remember a while back that there were some problems rendering with certain image formats on the timeline. I am sorry I don't recall the specifics, but it seems to me that a file dealing with images in Vegas was changed. Could this be related to that instance?
Wish I could remember better details abou it.

Go to the fX menu and make sure there aren't any third-party plug-ins installed. If there are uninstall them. I will not name names, but there are some that can cause these kinds of problems.
