Problems with AVIs

I have had two Fujifilm digital cameras and they both create AVI movie files. However I have not been able to directly import them into Vegas. I've tried a few conversions like through Windows Media Maker but I would obviously prefer not to go through this extra step of compression. I was wondering if anyone had any tips on the best way to handle this? Am I missing a codec, perhaps?

Any help at all? Even if it's not using Vegas, any suggestions on tools to convert movies with minimal recompression would be helpful...

Do you know what the codec the camera uses?

Cheers

This has come up before - these cams use some kind of MJPEG codec - a recent search for avi or MJPEG may bring up a recent solution.

Ok thanks for the tip. I found it searching on MJPEG. A co-worker of mine had also routed me to VirtualDub. However it appears to occasionally drop frames. Does anyone have any recommendations for good video codecs or formats with minimal loss of quality which is still importable into Vegas?

Matrox DigiSuite codecs are free. Use the standalone version. You just have to fill in a form to reach the download page. It seems there is no spam as a result.

Morgan MJPEG is viable, relatively cheap.
www.jpg.com PICVideo codec is OK, does seem to upset some NLEs including Vegas on longer form pieces, but cameras rarely run to more than 5 minutes of AVI per clip irrespective of media size (FujiFilm make cameras that do go longer tan 5 minutes, but my point is still true generally). I use PICvideo at home and DigiSuite codec pack at work.

Don't use the RT2x00/RTX codec pack instead, just DigiSuite.
Windows has a private reader for MJPEG which is why you can use this stuff in MovieMaker and WMP. Other tools will also allow conversion without a system wide codec like the above.

Good luck.
(sorry there are no short-cuts, I'm on a set top box with one window at a time)
