Problems with codecs

Hi everyone
Asked question about problems with AVI files on MS Plat 8. Have downloaded 8.0d tonight plus some of the codecs suggested on previous posts. Maybe a daft question, I've run and installed these programmes(plus update to MS) but when I go into software again still the same problem - files shown as AVI files, audio works but tells me video stream attributes don't work.
Am I missing a really simple stage somewhere? Do I have to drop AVI clips shown in the explorer window in MS into thee installed programmes somehow for them to covert them in some way?Sorry working with these sorts of files is still new ground to me.
Help or advise gratefully received.
Thanks
Andy

It seems that others (see some of the last threads in this forum) have had success with un- and reinstalling VMSP. Could be a hint.

Thanks for tip.
Apologies if sounds obvious question. Given that it sounds like I need some sort of codec installed to be able to use these AVI files on MS, after I've downloaded the codecs do I actually have to 'do' anything to the AVI files I've got loaded onto my pc already and I'm waiting to use in MS?
Does the pc automatically use the codec I've installed to make the AVI files usable? Sorry if sounds daft question but I've never used (to my knowledge anyway) codec files before.
Thanks
Andy

Your PC will/should automatically use the right codec if available.

There is a progran "Gspot" which actually tests this for you. Try to google it and install it.
