Problems with DVD-A 5b 13 coasters later

FilmingPhotoGuy wrote on 7/19/2009, 3:53 AM
I have 2 simple 720x576 mpgs about 20 mins each, rendered using "DVD-A template". I am still unable to create a DVD using DVD-A. 13 coasters later. I seem to be able to burn to DVD- RW discs only.

Rendering and Preparing go well untill burn process where it sits at 66% and estim time keeps climbing utill I stop it after reaching 72 hours. The empty DVD discs are useless after this.

I re-installed DVD-A5b.
I changed DVD burners from SATA to and IDE still the same.
Task manager reports no activity from DVD-A while burning

Any suggestions?

Update your burner firmware. Try Verbatim (my choice) or Taiyo Yuden blanks. Try ImgBurn software (free).

To expand a bit on what Nick is saying.
Trying using DVDA to prepare the files and then use another application to burn them to the DVD.

That's right, and to expand a little more, Verbatim +R are the ones with the great long-standing reputation, although -R may be quite OK. A further thing you could try is to burn at a slower speed than the max allowed by the media and burner combination. Try 8x for example, even if the software offers 12x or 16x.

I always burn half the advertised speed
I have updated the firmware.
I have re-installed DVD-A
I burned files to DVD using Nero 8 so the burner is OK.
I used Ulead Video Studio 10 and all OK
I haven't been able to burn anything using DVD-A.

I don't think it's the disks I think it's DVD-A. I suppose most users just make MPGs or AVI movies and don't actually make DVD's as the final format.

Just a question about +R & -R. Is the burner +R or -R specific?

Most burners can handle both +R and -R format disks. Try creating an ISO file and using the free Imgburn utility - see if that works OK. That is usually the way I burn DVD's since in most cases, I want more than one copy and once I have the ISO file, I can create as many as I want (now or later). You create the ISO file by selecting the iso burner or some such terminology from the burner selection menu. I always use the Taiyo Yuden Premium disks but there are others people like as well. What OS are you running under ?? Some flavor of Vista ? (I still have XP Pro with no intention of infecting my machine with Vista ... )

I'll try the ISO route. Seems strange that we have to use an alternative burning software. BTW, I'm running XP64 SP2.

LightAds, I agree with gpsmikey.
All I use DVDA for is to prepare the disc and then use different software to do the actual burning.

Is it because you don't get a successful burn?

LightAds, to be honest, I've never done a burn witrh DVDA.
When I first started burning DVDs, I got into the habit of using other software and have continued doing it this way ever since.

In the olden, golden days, it was very common to author with one tool and burn with another. I *mostly* burn with DVDA now, but I have a much faster system on the network, so I'll often author in one instance, but over the network, I'll share the ISO and burn from there. Since most of our work goes out as DDP files on disc, we're typically only viewing to check for incorrect content.

I seem to be able to burn to DVD- RW discs only.

I use DVDA to burn discs. No problem. I use to use NERO but have been using DVDA since 5.0 came out with no issues. Just easier. I don't think I'm alone. DVDA does work. If you are able to burn DVD-RW with DVDA and all other types of discs with other software, then I'd suggest some kind of system conflict with DVDA. Conflicting drivers will do strange things. If you have the energy and time the best way to track down the problem is to start with a fresh boot drive, load your OS and system drivers, load Vegas and DVDA, load your project files and try to burn a disc. The idea is to isolate the problem.

Been using DVD Architect to author and burn DVDs since 1.0. With that version, I did get coasters when trying to burn TDK DVD+R even though TDK DVD-R (and other brands of DVD+R) worked fine. Since 2.0, I've had no such problems.

My advice: Try a different brand.
