problems with files

Hi all,
being back from a business trip, I just started the editing process. After I have captured around 4 hours of video, I wanted to import all these files into my vegas project. In the beginning everything worked fine, but after I allready had a lot of movies, vegas begins to make trouble.
- vegas says it has problems opening one or more files
- In the project media window the small previews of some movies don´t show a thumbnail
- if I drag these movies onto the timeline, I only see a red thumbnail and preview.

Does anybody know what could be the problem?
I have a 2xIntel Xeon PC with 3,2GHz, 3GB of RAM and a raid harddisk whith 400gb, still 50gb left.

Any input is greatly appreciated.

Usually when Vegas shows a blank or red thumbnail your running out of memory.

thanks for your reply.
MemoKit shows 1797412k used by vegas, and still quite some free memory.
But it seems to have to do with memory, because it doesn´t happen until I import a large number of movies.
