Problems with iPhone Videos

I am using Vegas Pro 9.0e (Build 1147)

I did a bunch of filming on my iPhone 5S recently, and on trying to work with it in Vegas have encountered several issues mostly of it not showing the video, just the audio, or simply crashing. After scouring the internet I tried downgrading Quicktime to 7.6, and that seemed to fix it for a while, but now it's back to stalling, crashing, and not playing the preview again, and i have yet to find any solution.

If this is a Sony Vs. Apple thing, then that sucks. I was just wondering if you had any insight on this. It's getting ridiculous as I edited 2/3rd's of like a 15 minute long film before it started crashing again. Converting always seems to reduce the quality too by the way, so that doesn't seem to be a viable choice.

Worth a shot.

Thanks

I've had this problem too, though I'm on Vegas Pro v12.

I think one solution is to convert the iPhone video clips to something like MP4 format using Handbrake - it solved the problem for me.

If you left your Quickime set to automatically update, it will do so, right away.
Check your version again.

I always convert mov's to avi or double pass MP4. If the data rate is high, loss is very negligible. You can edit about 5 minutes of MOV clips before ANY version of SVP will start crashing. When SVP says it supports MOV files it don't say how many.

I have all kinds of MOV lower thirds and motion clips. When the timeline plays them its always choppy. If I have ten or fifteen of them the program becomes unstable. I always convert them.

MOV is a very nice CODEC. Great if you use FCP.

What do you mean by "double pass" mp4?

Also, in regards to Handbrake, do you know if there's a way to have the converted files have the exact same name as the original? I want to replace my currently edited files with the converted ones in the timeline, and when Vegas says the files are missing, and asks for me to specify where they are located i would think it would only work if it has the same name.

Easiest way is to render the files into a sub folder, rename the old files then copy the new files into the original folder.

Two pass render can be useful for getting the best bit usage out of the smallest number of bits.

It's available in some render templates.

"MOV is a very nice CODEC."

MOV is a container or wrapper. It contains codecs. "Very nice" is in the eye of the beholder.
