Problems with playback

Been having an issue lately with Movie Studio 16.0. I am using the program on a Dell PC Laptop running Windows 10. Worked wonderfully for several months and now having problems with playback. When I first open the program, put in a clip, edit the video, everything is fine. The playback (spacebar or play button) works. Once I render the video clip, now suddenly playback no longer works. It doesn't work on the clip that is already there or if I delete what is there and put in a whole new clip. An error message comes up "An error occurred while starting playback. The request is not enabled for this device." However, if I completely restart the program, playback will work, unless I render the finished video clip and then it won't work anymore. Anyone know how to fix this? Not sure what happened.

This could be the soundcard. Do you normally playback the video you have rendered? If so, it could be that Windows is not releasing the soundcard back to Movie Studio.

This problem crops up occasionally. I experienced it years ago with VMS12 on a Vista machine. It's obviously unique to some users systems and as DougT suggests it's something to do with the soundcard.

Recently with VMS17P I've found after rendering my audio volume on timeline playback is reduced and of poor quality. Not as bad as getting "An error occurred while starting playback. The request is not enabled for this device." Anyway to fix it I go Options/Preferences/Audio Device and change the top box to a different device. Click OK and I'm back to normal. Usually I then repeat the process putting my audio device selection back to how it originally was (Microsoft Sound Mapper). It only takes a few seconds, a lot quicker than restarting VMSP17.
