as is often asked hereabouts - system specs?

I use 2.7K 60P footage from a GoPro Hero Black. It will not play in V12. It exhibits the same symptoms you describe. It's completely unusable. To use V12, you will have to transcode to a digital intermediate such as Cineform. However, it works perfectly in V13 Build 453. There was a major fix in that release. I can preview both 2.7K 60P and 4K at best/full without issue--even with my very weak video card.

Try downloading Sony's Catalyst Browse (free) and see how it plays back. Catalyst will really let you pull some great color out of your video. I usually transcode from Catalyst Prepare (paid/fuller featured version) into 1080p and use that in Vegas.

Also, I have sometimes found better playback with 4k in Vegas by setting the project to 1080. I fly a Phantom Pro and haven't shot anything other than 4k thus far.

@Norman

I had a bit of time today to look into what is going on. Some users noted that these 1080-60p GoPro files play well in VP11. I got both VP11 32&64bit versions, reinstalled it on my Win7x64 machine and yes, the file plaid well; 59.94fps at Best/Full. I then used a program to monitor the API interface and dll that is called upon when playing the file back. The dll in question is "mc_dec_avc.dll" at this location "C:\Program Files\Sony\Vegas Pro 12.0\FileIO Plug-Ins\compoundplug" I then copied the file from VP11 64bit over to VP12 and voila it plays at 59.94fps Best/Full!
If you don't have VP11 64bit here is a link to the dll https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/39278380/mc_dec_avc.dll Do not delete or overwrite the original VP12 dll but rather rename it; just in case. I haven't done any further studies but I did render it out and that worked well too.

I hope that helps.

For GoPro footage, I believe this has been fixed in the latest build of Vegas Pro 13.0 so I would download the trial of VP13 and see if your footage plays back smoothly with that. If it does, it may be time to upgrade!

You can't expect to buy a new camera and use old software to edit the footage. New formats come out every day and you need to keep your software up to date,

Remember to do a trial download first. I believe Sony gives you 30 days. Make sure it works for you. As stated above, you can always use a digital intermediate in V12, although upgrading would be the best solution. Lots of good things about V13 over V12, in particular, stability.

If possible, can you upload a sample clip to something like Dropbox so others might try it on their system?

That may not be sufficient playback 2.7K footage especially if you don't have a discrete GPU that is well supported by Vegas.

It should be. I can play both 2.7K 60P and 4K 30P from my Hero 4 Black with preview on full/best on 2nd monitor at full frame rate, with the color levels and sharpen Fx added, even with my under-powered Nvidia 650. Just curious. Is footage from the DJ Phantom the same as GoPro?

The Nvidia 650 compared to the HD5500 is power house. HD5500 does not support CUDA, limited OpenCL and only has 24 shader Units.

From the Internet:
Equipped with fast dual-channel memory, the HD Graphics 5500 outperforms the HD Graphics 4400 (Haswell, 20 EUs) by 20 - 25 percent and also beats the HD Graphics 5000 (Haswell, 40 EUs). However, even a low-end dedicated GeForce 820M ist about 10 - 30 percent faster than the HD 5500. Games as of 2014/2015 will usually run fluently only at (very) low settings.

Nvidia 5500
That would be a very old Nvidia Card not even supported by Vegas. You have an Intel CPU with a build in HD5500 GPU which is not a bad.

If you managed to make it work in VP13 then go to the Event on the timeline or select the Clip in the Project media, right click it and click Properties. Click the last tab, I think it's called Properties again, it will Show you the files properties, Location on the hard drive and the last section will Show you which plug in Vegas is using to Display the file. Find that dll in VP13 and copy it to the same Location in VP12; just make a backup of the original VP12 dll first. Then give it a try again. You can also use the dll from my link, which is from VP11 and works well with GoPro footage.

V13 and v12 is using the same dll

No. They have the same name "compoundplug.DLL", but the file version numbers are different. The V13 file is also a bit larger. Also the files "mc_dec_avc.dll" which I assume do the actual decoding are different.

Again, if you can't get it to work by switching "dll's", then use GoPro Studio to convert the mp4's to Cineform avi's which Vegas 12 will read without issue.

dll was the problems i change and works

I had the same problem with 13.0. The easy way to tell if your computer is the problem is to try playing it in VLC. Mine played smooth as silk in VLC.
It turns out I had an older build of 13.0. Upgrading to build 955 fixed the issue without having to mess with the DLLs.
NickHope wrote on 2/3/2016, 2:13 AM
955? The last build of VP13 is 453.

I can confirm that the update to mc_dec_avc.dll in the latest build does fix the playback smoothness issue with DJI footage, and that dll does also work if copied into VP12.
