In task manager, under the processes tab, if you right click vegas 8, there is a priority option. Does anyone know if there is an advantage to setting to to "high" or "realtime"? It makes intuitive sense that it would help channel resourses to the program.
Also, I know it's been mentioned, but the free program "End It All 2" works great to quickly end background programs before starting to edit. It's easy to find on google. I can confirm that it works with 64 bit Vista.
