Search the forums and you will find heaps of debates with guys like DSE and avid avid users. He does editiing shows and shootouts using Vegas, sucessfully.
1. I am not trying to convince anyone of anything.
2. I am new to vegas, i dont know a lot about all the pro users, but i have read a far bit about DSE, since he is a pro and is also SO incredibly helpful to us newer users.
There are a lot of users on this board and others that use Vegas in their video businesses. DSE being one of the better known.
Are professionals only those working in Hollywood on major productions or do we include the guy working from home doing wedding videos, slide shows for corporates, music videos for small bands? A lot of the work I have seen here would rival the Hollywood version. And it is done using a $450 software package.
I am using vegas as a hobby but the video package I am putting together is impressing the audience. They have no clue about the magic. And thats what this is, magic.
I second that - what is it you are trying to get convinced about?
This topic has been covered a great deal of time (use the search feature and do some research).
Do all "professionals" use Vegas - well I guess it depends on what you are defining as professional. If you mean do people use Vegas (and other SoFo products) to produce works for pay....the answer is yes.
But, on the other hand - if having spend 50K on a camera and countless other thousands of dollars on editing equipment (and other stuff) would a person settle in to Vegas as an editor/producer? Guess it depends on how they work.
Vegas (and other SoFo products) I have been using for years - and swear by them. I've dinked around with other stuff...but from a PC perspective and doing what I do I don't need anything else.
Speaking from first-hand experience, I know for a fact that Vegas is used by an editor at one of the three major American broadcast television networks. He edits a program that is seen by 8 to 10 million people a week.
In the simplest sense you can be a "professional" anything. If you're getting paid for your "work", you have the respect of your peers, you follow some generally accepted principles, rules, guidelines, standards or maybe to be even broader you just do whatever it is you do well, then duh, you can be a professional videographer or a professional janitor, flag pole sitter or some professional athlete that gets paid tens of millions to chase or hit some ball, puck, or maybe sit behind the wheel of a sports car and zip around a track at breakneck speed or sit on top a horse.
Silly questions only deserve silly answers. How many "professionals" use Vegas? More they probably admit they do. For the same reason chiropractors have medical doctors as patients... but they don't dare come in through the front door and sit in the reception area.
Why not? Because human nature being what it is some people are more worried about what others THINK of them and so have a heard mentality and so go with the flow. Such people are rarely very clever and decide how to dress, what to eat, what to drive and where to live based on what he sees others doing.
Vegas is pretty much still the new kid on the block. In the short time its been out its got increasing attention and those that try it usually like it. Some pigheaded fools foolishly flock to what others use for no reason other than they see others using it. Some do it because to be honest they don't know any better. Others do it became it seems fashionable. Still others like FCP users use that because Duh... that's one of only a few choices you got if you have a Mac and many have a Mac because they haven't woke up yet to realize its a Windows world and has been for a couple decades already.

COOL!!
but I'm sure you can't mention which program 'cause the guy would probably get in trouble for not using a "professional" (not my opinion) system.:(
However, I do believe you and it's good to know. There's probably lots o' folk using Vegas in the "closet". Maybe they can use that as an advert idea. If they have another contest for creating a commercial spot that would be a cool angle to use. :)

Just pulled out the calculator...Vegas has made me $32,674.52 and counting. Not a bad expense to profit ratio. I edited one project that has grossed six figures entirely on Vegas vid. As stated above, I guess it depends on what you mean by professional. Perhaps you mean someone like my friend who works for WB. He uses Discreet's Smoke. If you don't mind spending the extra $200,000, I highly recommend it. haha D
Souza,
Why don't you spell-check your own posts instead?
This is a forum where people use their private time to answer questions about a certain video editing software. Please do not offend their contributing spirit.

Using professional software does not make you any better, it's about using the right tools to do the job, and how you use them. I've got a Fender Stratocaster but I can't do what Hendrix did. Vegas is way the best product in it's price range, but if you have money to burn? Can you do 200 m.p.h on the American freeway in a Porsche? so what's the point in having one. I guess there is a smart answer coming for that one.
I've met many bad "professional" AVID editors. Mouse clickers who have the technical knowledge required to use the AVID (or Final Cut) but lack that creative ability that separates real video editors from the wannabes. A good editor can cut a great show even with "P". However, programs such as Vegas make his/her job much easier.
I think knowing how vegas works and the more knowledge you have the better but ultimately someone with a lot less knowledge than me will be making better films because they are well practised in making films that is why chienworks site needs all the encouragement he can so that we can experiment and learn how to become racing drivers not just competant drivers (become editors)
Anything what you can do in ather products, you can in VEGAS. Åñëè áû â ÂÅÃÀÑå ìîæíî áûëî áû ïîäêëþ÷àòü Plugins êàê â äðóãèõ ïðîäóêòàõ - öåíû áû åìó íå áûëî áû. Sorry, I'm Russian
I know a lot of proffesionals working at major post houses throughout the country and I can tell you this. They are either using a cinewave, smoke, flame, avid or final cut pro. I know of no major houses using vegas. That doesn't mean vegas is considered bad or good. It just means it hasn't completely taken off yet. Vegas is a great product. But the fact remains that if you don't know avid, final cut pro, or a discreet product, you aint gettin a good job in the industry. I think vegas is used mainly by corporate producers or wedding video makers. Of course, exceptions always exist.
Our post consists of anything shot in DV is edited in Vegas,,, anything shot on Beta is edited in Avid. Not a matter of one being better than the other,, different tools for different formats. Many Vegas projects have hit the airwaves
If I was the boss of a TV Company I would probably farm a lot of work out to Post production houses and I would be looking at those companies that give the best results and those succesfull companies would be usng the best editing suites YYYYAAAAAY VEGAS ROCKS and if they dont know it yet they will
Sometimes when I see the "do pros use it" question (also often asked on the Cakewalk board) I translate it as "does anybody in a position to buy an expensive package (eg, Avid) choose Vegas because they like it, not because its cheaper."
I'm a hobbyist, so I don't have any inside scoop on this, other than what I read on the boards. But it seems to me that question might be a good barometer of how Vegas is taking off in "the industry." Same could be said of other relatively-inexpensive software vs. established, expensive giants.
I gather DSE would be an example of a guy who would probably plunk down coin for his favorite system, but uses Vegas because he likes it.
