alain_e, nice find.

I am running a SONY VAIO desktop w/touch screen. I found out when I went to add memory that it has a laptop mother board. When I stated earlier "disconnect all USB devices" I forgot that the built in touch screen and camera are USB devices as well. I keep the camera "disabled" in device manager for privacy, and the touch screen because my cat launches all of my apps when he prances across my desk.

I just purchased a new HP OMEN super computer and I am about to start porting over to it. Dreadful, Adobe Acrobat is now $14.95 PER MONTH !!! And it it won't activate my version XI license key that I purchased for my VAIO because it's a discontinued product. More to come I'm sure...

I just find on my Vaio a service named "Cam Monitoring" from Arcsoft.

I don't know how this service was here, may be it was here from day 1 with some legacy software from Arcsoft.

Anyway this service was disabled.

As the name was "Cam" related I just "enable" this service and put it on "Automatic".

I rebooted Windows...and VMS can now start again without any problem...no need anymore to start Skype or another software dealing with the webcam or VMS and then kill it etc....this service has the same "side-effect" allowing VMS to link to my webcam.

The advantage of using a service is that it starts together with Windows and you don't care about doing something particular.

Just for the fun...

each time I get a Windows update just to see, I disable this Cam Monitoring service and try to start VMS and each time I get a freeze...until today...after a very BIG W10 update....no freeze anymore...back to normal.

Thanks to MS to keep us busy with their own mistake...very disappointing.

Switched to the HP OMEN, Zero Issues. Running Win 10 Pro 1709 Build 16299.64 on i7-7700K CPU @ 4.20 Ghz w/64 Gb Ram. The Sony version of the Vaio was designed for Win 7. Some of my compilers complain as well as VMS, we traced the problem to legacy issues with the Intel Microcode https://ark.intel.com/products/53469/Intel-Core-i7-2670QM-Processor-6M-Cache-up-to-3_10-GHz
