Program Problems

MH7 wrote on 6/17/2024, 2:58 AM

Okay, so I want to note before I detail my program problems below that the reason I have placed this post under 'Off Topic' is because my problem that I'm about to detail isn't specific to Vegas Pro. So, with that out of the way, here is my problem:

I have been running Vegas Pro 20, Corel PaintShop Pro 2018, and another little program utility in the background that enables you to preview any files just by pressing 'Enter' or 'Spacebar' (similar to what you can do natively in MacOS; FYI: I'm currently typing this on my MacBook Pro). These programs have been running fine on my new custom built Windows 11 PC detailed below in my sig...until recently. I even tried reinstalling VEGAS Pro 20 and the program will not even open. It just gives me an error message.

Yes, I do install Windows 11 updates, but I have not been having any problems with the mention programs not opening after installing any updates. I use Microsoft Office programs, mostly PowerPoint, and PowerPoint opens absolutely fine with no problems. I even have DaVinci Resolve 18.6 on this Windows 11 PC and it too opens absolutely fine with no problems. I can even open Vegas Image with no problems. Therefore, I'm just wondering what could possibly be the thing causing the mention programs not opening.

When I try to open, say, Corel PaintShop Pro 2018 (64Bit) it will open for a couple of seconds but then close itself, Vegas Pro 20 won't even open (as mentioned above), it'll do the usual splash screen and look like it's loading the various program elements on the splash screen, but then when it's finished doing that it displays an error message. If this problem cannot be solved then the only solution I can see is to backup the computer and do a fresh install of Windows 11, which is a bit laborious, but I'm willing to do it.

Thanks in advance to anyone who is able to help me with this issue.

I’ve actually been designing and animating a new intro for my Tech Wired Geek YouTube channel. But I closed VP 20 one day, shutdown my computer, and booted up my computer another day and tried to load up VP 20 and it wouldn’t work, along with some programs as mentioned in my initial post.

Interesting fact, after I had done a Windows update (specifically KB5039212) my internet ceased to work. I had no internet. I didn’t realise the update was the culprit but it turned out that it was. Because when I uninstalled the update today my internet worked once again. So, I’m guessing that perhaps a Windows update has caused VEGAS Pro 20, Corel PaintShop Pro 2018, and another utility that’s enabled in the background that I use (as mentioned above in my initial post) to stop working.

Interestingly enough several people have had problems with the KB5039212 Windows update causing problems for them. For me it was disabling my internet but for others it’s been other things. I was hoping uninstalling the update would bring back more than just my internet, like my 3 programs functionality, but unfortunately not. But I do wonder if another Windows update I have installed has disabled the three mentioned programs. I will certainly be doing some research and finding out.

I was wondering if the “So4HardwareDetectionError.log” might have been helpful. Therefore I thought resetting VEGAS might fix it.

Well, I don’t know what to tell you, only that it did for me. I don’t know why. All I know is that after I uninstalled it I got my internet back. So the update was obviously interfering with my wifi connection in some way. But I’m happy that you’ve had no problems with it.

On the possibility that there is a problem of some kind in the registry, try running a regstry cleaner such as the free CCleaner app to see if its registry clean might remove an orphan registry entry that is causing a problem The registry clean is selectable in the app's Tools/Registry option - and what it recommends to be cleaned can be saved as a backup so that it can be restored if necessary.

Usually, PaintShop Pro is as solid as a rock except for it being slow to open.

and another little program utility in the background that enables you to preview any files just by pressing 'Enter' or 'Spacebar' (similar to what you can do natively in MacOS

Might that little app be the problem? Perhaps try uninstalling it, run a registry clean to get rid of its 'ghosts' in the registry and then see if Vegas Pro and Paintshop Pro open successfully.

Oh, I forgot about CCleaner. You could be right. I will download that next time I boot up my computer.

Usually, PaintShop Pro is as solid as a rock except for it being slow to open.

Yeah, it is usually pretty good. But it is slow to open and, in some cases (I’m not sure if this has improved with newer versions) a bit sluggish to use in some areas of the app, even on newer faster systems.

and another little program utility in the background that enables you to preview any files just by pressing 'Enter' or 'Spacebar' (similar to what you can do natively in MacOS

Might that little app be the problem? Perhaps try uninstalling it, run a registry clean to get rid of its 'ghosts' in the registry and then see if Vegas Pro and Paintshop Pro open successfully.

I did a quick search of what the app was called. I actually downloaded from the Microsoft Store. It’s called - QuickLook -. I didn’t have any problems with this little app utility on my older PC under Windows 10, but, of course, not all computers are the same. So, you could be correct. I’ll see what I can do.

Thanks for your suggestion and help mate! 👍🏻

UPDATE RE Wi-Fi ISSUE WITH WINDOWS UPDATE KB5039212: Unfortunately, Windows 11 somehow installed this specific update again, only this time I couldn’t uninstall it. So, after it installed it, I returned to having no internet once more.

Strangely enough, when I went through Window's thing to help with restoring my internet connection, one of the options was to reset my network adapter (which is created by Realtek) on my PC's ASROCK motherboard. But that did not fix the issue (I had gone through this last time also).

However, then I had a thought of disabling and re-enabling my Wi-Fi connection in Window's settings. The result...my internet was restored. That made me then think of how odd technology can be sometimes. One thing, like resetting the actual hardware won't restore it, but flicking a switch in Windows does? That is odd. 🤔

UPDATE RE FIXING AFORMENTIONED PROGRAMS NOT WORKING CORRECTLY: It's obvious to me that I will need to format my main SSD that Windows 11 is installed on and reinstall Windows 11 and everything else. However, I think I have been bitten by the DaVinci Resolve bug because, whilst not being able to use VEGAS Pro and other programs on my PC until I backup my files on my Windows 11 SSD and format and start again, I began really looking into DaVinci Resolve and really fiddling with it and teaching myself how to use it.

In this learning I discovered and taught myself (with looking at some DaVinci Resolve tutorials on online) of how to do a lot of the things that I know how to do in VEGAS Pro but done the DaVinci Resolve way. And I'm sorry to say, but I have actually found myself liking DaVinci Resolve more than VEGAS Pro, liking how it functions and operates, and how smoothly it works on my Windows 11 PC and MacBook Pro. And how much easier you can work with fine detail and placement of graphics that I create, much smoother and better than VEGAS Pro.

Nevertheless, I may still use VEGAS Pro from time to time, but I think DaVinci Resolve has now become my NLE Video Editor of choice. I wasn't expecting this to happen, didn't even know it was going to happen, but there was one extra thing that tipped me over to DaVinci Resolve from VEGAS Pro, and that is that it's cross platform and that I can use it on my MacBook Pro and PC, not just my PC, or just my MacBook Pro, but both of them.

I may still watch how MAGIX continues to develop VEGAS Pro, just to see how things are improving, but this transition from VEGAS Pro to DaVinci Resolve feels much like my transition from Corel VideoStudio to VEGAS Pro, it seemed to happen ever so quickly, but it happened, nevertheless.
