Programs Bashed by the new MS Service Pack

Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 884130 is a list of programs that "may behave differently" if you install the new Windows XP Service Pack.
No Sony products are explicitly listed there yet, but the list is long, and it's probably still in its growth phase. A pretty big handful of the programs I use every day are on the list.

I'm gonna avoid the Service Pack, though it makes me queasy to think about what security holes I might be leaving open...

Don't sweat it too much. If you've been keeping up with Windows updates you should be pretty well covered. The list of holes and bugs in SP2 is already long and still growing fast. At least the old holes are known and for the most part patchable. The new holes are all scary unknowns.

Not sure about the games listed but I know that Ahead has already fixed the SP2 bug with the Nero updates that came out a few days ago. The McAffe stuff is being adressed here: McAfee FAQ for XP SP2. I think many of the bugs are being, or have been, worked out - even the 5.0b update for Vegas fixed a bug with SP2.

what is scary is that there are so many MS apps on the list -- and this thing was in beta for a year ...

having ghost not work is also not a good thing ...

I've heard around here, people who use Windows XP Pro and who have a wide range of applics SHOULD NOT UPDATE TO SP2, at least untill it's 100% stable. It's interesting to note that some foks around here who had the original XP Pro (I mean with no SP1), had chosen to download an alternative file to fix that first security issue, instead of downloading that whole pack named SP1 - please take a look at....

I've also heard that their systems run perfectly nowadays.....

I've upgraded my system running Vegas 4.0 to Windows XP SP2 and it's been running fine. A problem in SP1 that has been dodging my ADVC-1394 is also fixed in SP2.

Here's a link to the article referred to:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;884130

MS states in the article that most of the problems come from a) Firewall, or b) data execution prevention (executing code from a region marked as data).

I've had SP2 for a week now and have not noticed any issues with Vegas5b, DVDA2a, Nero 5.5.10.56, or any of my other applications.

SP2 can be uninstalled (I've done it), if that makes you feel any better.

If the whole thing can be uninstalled, so that's ok!
