Progressive Scan Recommendations

I'm getting varied opinions on whether I should be taping in Progressive Scan mode on my Canon Elura. Some people say to always record in Progressive Scan mode. Others say just when outputting to a progressive scan monitor/tv.

Typically I'm not taping fast motion. Usually the fastest is a chld running or swinging on a swing. My output medium is a standard interlaced TV, but also can be to a Pioneer Elite TV which supports progressive scan.

Is there any rule of thumb as to when I should use progressive scan, or when I shouldn't? I tried my own test with and without progressive scan and played it back to my interlaced TV. I didn't like the results of the progressive scan test. Even with slight panning I saw jaggies on vertical lines. I would like to use progresive scan if it made my video more "movie like'. If you have progressive scan, how do you use it?

Thanks for your input.

I had a Canon Optura Pi and really liked progressive scan. When I look back at the movies I made with it, I feel it really did give them a movie-like look. I'm not sure if the Elura operates the same way, but the Optura took 1 complete frame every 30 seconds, full resolution and then outputted it to tape as 60 interlaced. Thus, every 30th of a second you would get 1 frame outputted to the display. I didn't notice the jaggies you're talking about. I'm sure the Elura operates the same way.

However, if you don't like the results just film in regular 60i and then experiment with several techniques discussed on this forum, like simply rendering to progressive from Vegas, or copying the video track, rendering one upper, the other lower and experiment with the opacity of the upper track.

Finally you could try DVFilmMaker, the solution I was using with my TRV50, which didn't have progressive scan. You shoot 60i, let DVFilmmaker process it and you get really fine results.

One thing I like about shooting progressive with my Canon Elura, apart from a very pleasing "film look," is the superb quality of the stills I extract. Think of it, it's like shooting 30 full-frame stills per second.

It's all subjective. I have a jvc gr-dv2000 and I only shoot in progressive. I just like the look that it produces. There's really no right or wrong way to it. Whatever looks best to you!
