progressive scan to PAL complient

I have been trying to make a DVD of previously rendered ( in Vegas ) footage that was archived back onto my Digital8 camcorder. The video plays fine on my PAL TV set from the digital8 camera , but when I imported this footage back onto Vegas4 , I was getting interlace problems , only fixed by changing the settings to progressive scan and then the image was perfect in the vegas preview window.
My probelm is that pregressive scan images are not DVD complient ,so I am unable to make a DVD (via sonic foundry Architect ).

My question is:
Is there a way to change a progressive scan film to a DVD complient film ( PAL 4:3 ) ?

and ....what went wrong !!! The footage, that plays fine from the source digital8 camera on a PAL tv , bu tnot when imported back into Vegas???

Your problem may be very simple, or maybe not...
The internal preview monitor in Vegas displays in progressive scan, no choice, thats how PC monitors work. So you will see some bad interlace artifacts. If you still see them on an external monitor then further investigation is needed.

BTW the DVD spec does support progressive scan but only at 24p

Thanks ,
I hope it is a simple issue .....

But I was worried when I have not had this issue with any of the other raw footage that has NOT been archived back to digital8 and imported back to Vegas.

Just to be sure,
if all that your seeing looks like a fine toothed comb on the vertical egdes of things that are moving fast and the artifacts are each one scan line then nothing to worry about. If they're bigger than that or if the motion seems excessively jerky it could be somthing else.

Just check that the field order is lower field first.

Maybe your just developing a more critical eye, one of the downsides of this game, it's hard to watch anything without pulling it apart.

Hi farss,

Yes it is..."if all that your seeing looks like a fine toothed comb on the vertical egdes of things that are moving fast and the artifacts are each one scan line then nothing to worry about.." .....but this is something I have not had happen when i have captured images from my digital8 PAL camera. All these images where fine( lower field first ) and NO fine toothed comb on the vertical egdes of things either via the Vegas preview window, or via a rendered mpeg2 or mpeg1 file played on the PC or when played on a tv monitor......Seems odd now at ONLY footage that had been previously renedered in Vegas and archieved back t odigita8 tape ,THEN re imported into vegas , did this problem arise....

I was used to being able to view the footage in vegas, knowing that the image I as seeing would be how the finished render would appear on a finished VCD or DVD or directly on a tv set......

I will have to set up my TV monitor and view this footage on it and tinker wiht the settings till I get the required result.......

I a mjust as a lost as to why i am getting this effect now ,when all raw footage that has NOT been to vegas and back to digital8 for archiving is working fine ?

Did i same the finished , working film back on to my digital8 camcorder in a different format ? My settings say it was a standard PAL DV template ..for print to tape..

I'm at abit of a loss as well, certainly any footage I've captured straight off my D8 has the expected artifacts on the internal monitor.

Capturing is purely a data copy, Vegas does nothing to that data and assuming you didn't change any project settings the only time anything happens to that data as it goes back to tape is when FX or transisitions are applied. For example, you can capture footage, make cuts and PTT and apart from the bits you cut out Vegas will change nothing. If you have made a booboo Vegas will say it needs to render everthing before PTT

I don't usually get artifacts on D8 raw footage displayed on my interval vegas monitor, always get a clean crisp image, so if you are expecting to get artrifacts , it maybe me being over critical on the footage......

I'll output the footage , to my external tv monitor tonight and see what is really happening......

Thanks Farss ..

Hi farss,
I have just changed the project settings back to PAL interlace , and rendered a sampe 1 min bit of footage and burnt a DVD in via sonic architech and it can out a treat.......so I was worrying for nothing !!

I will in future run all my footage to a TV monitor before geting worried.....
