I am fairly certain the final number in the media specification refers to the pixel aspect ratio (correct me if I am wrong), but what does it mean? ie. what number is square, or NTSC DV, or HD, etc.
No... the last number refers to bits. If it's 32, it's likely:
Each channel has 8 bits.
There are four channels... red, green, blue, and alpha/transparency.
8 bits/channel * 4 channels = 32 bits.
Pixel aspect ratio is specified in the pixel aspect ratio area. Vegas will try to look at your clips and make everything the correct PAR... it looks at a few things:
A- The PAR of your clip. You can change this by going in the clip/event's properties.
B- Whether the "maintain pixel aspect ratio" setting on the clip is on/off. Access this from properties of from pan/crop.
C- The PAR of the project settings, the render as settings, or the render to new track settings. Depending on what you're doing.
My daughter asked for a fresh bottle of milk just before I could hit submit, so GlennChan pipped me to the post!:
No, it isn't the aspect ratio.
It is the fact that the renderer is applying RGBA. Red signal, Green and Blue plus Alpha channel data for use if you need it downstream. In 8bits per channel (RGBA). 32 its in total.
Makes perfect sense - thank you! A bit confusing because I could not find the answer in the help (without having a clue as to what it was I was looking for...).
It is a pity that the documentation hasn't been refined to cover displayed details such as this over the years but then if it was there would be a lot less opportunity to strike up a good rapport on these forums. ;-)
