Project Media Thumbnails

paul-marshall wrote on 11/15/2023, 8:40 AM

Is it normal on opening the Project Media Window for it to take 5-10 seconds to populate it with 32 thumbnails from 4k xavc-s media on every time of opening? (There are proxy files.)
I only open the Project Media window when I need it. In the past I thought Vegas was more stable if it had less windows to update.
I can understand it may take time to generate a thumbnail from a clip the first time but shouldnt it be cached and hence appear instantly next time? Windows Explorer takes a similar time to generate thumbnails first time but at least they are cached and on subsequently opening a folder the thumbs appear immdediately.
Is it normal, a bug, or a system weakness at my end?

You've made no comment in your signature about disk I/O. I would think your processor should be able to get it done in your lifetime.

I wouldn't bet on it!
You havn't said if the behaviour I describe is normal or not.

Interesting question. Are the thumbnails, once they are generated in a project, cached.

Judging by the performance each time I would load the project, I don't think so. But they populate fast enough for me, and I'll have like in my last project, almost 900 images, video and music that is loaded, in addition to titles created using Vegas.

In my experience, it has always taken time for thumbnails to populate the Project Media window after opening Vegas Pro. But once VP is open and clicking to another window and then back to Project Media in the same session, the previously built thumbnails are still there. Close down VP and re-open, the rebuild process starts again. IMO, it has always been thus since I started with VP10. These days, I tend to use the List or Details display option to avoid the thumbnail issue.

@Dexcon I suspect it hasn't. I can only comment as a VMS user but it changed from VMS16 to 17. With 16 I have a Media Pool Thumbnails folder in my user AppData Local. But not in VMS17. I find projects take longer to load in VMS17 presumably because the thumbnails are being recreated. Both versions have a File Explorer Thumbnails folder though. I often wonder why caching of Media Pool thumbnails was dropped.

I suspect the same situation exists with VP.

@EricLNZ  ... I can only cite my experience with Vegas Pro 10 - 21 using 4 different destops with either NVidia or AMD GPUs during those some 13 years. For me, the rebuilding of thumbnails in the Project Media window has always occurred (I wish that it didn't) - and still does in VP21b187.

I always have project media open and haven't particularly noticed it takes time for thumbnails to populate. I don't really pay much attention to what VEGAS is doing right after I open it. There's no delay with switching between tabs once it is open.

I'm also using 4K X-AVC S Sony media and usually media and the project is on m2 SSDs.

paul-marshall wrote on 11/17/2023, 6:15 AM

Many thanks everyone for those comments. It does appear that the thumbnails are not cached so as resolution and bit rates increase so will the time taken to generate a thumbnail. Cacheing would be a good future improvement but meanwhile I'll try keeping the window open.
I notice that having several NewBlue Titler Pro 7 titles makes the project media window considerably more sluggish yet doesnt show a thumbnail anyway. The more I use Titler Pro 7 the more I dont want to - but it's the best I have!
