Project media, use count in time length?

VMP wrote on 4/28/2014, 4:37 PM
In Vpro 12 in the project media window there is an 'use count' column. It shows how many events of that media is present on the timeline.

But is there a quick way do determine how much time length of a specific media is used on the timeline? Instead of selecting and calculating manually.

Especially for music this is important. Broadcasters require this. The time length use of each music track must be provided separately.

Thanks in advance,

VMP

Hey VMP,

No there's isn't anything like this by default in the Project Media window, however this sounds like something our scripting API would be able to handle if you knew the specific media file you wanted that information for and then could walk the event list looking for those references and then add the lengths up for the total usage.

In Timeline Tools if you use the Select Media Type Filter feature and select Show duplicate Media path refs. The entire main display window will collapse to only show Events that share the same piece of media. You will still need to calculate the results, but the Length numbers will come from Event rows that are next to each other; rather than being scattered throughout the Track.

You can do this semi-manually in the event details window. Set it to either Events or Selected Events. If using Selected Events select the first event on the track in question and then Shift-Select the last event on the track in question. This will give you a list of all those events including the Start, End, Duration, TC In, TC Out, Active Take Name, and the file path.

Once you've got the list, click in the top left corner of the grid to select all of it and then press Ctrl+C to copy the data. You can paste it into a spreadsheet or notepad, etc.

A script would probably make it easier to do something like selecting all audio files regardless of tracks, but VP 12 and 13 also make this easier than it used to be, I think. Go to the Project Media window and sort it by type. Select your audio files and then right-click on them and chose Select Timeline Events. That will get all the selected audio events listed in the Edit Details window.

Actually, this second method would be the way to go if you wanted a report of all the snippets of a particular piece of media on your timeline. This might be a bit harder if you're using nested Veg files(?)

I've just released Timeline Tools v1.0.57. This new version contains exactly the feature you're looking for. Whatever Events are displayed in the Main Display Grid, filtered or unfiltered, simply hover your mouse over the Item Count label, and a popup will show the combined length of all Events displayed in the Grid.

Gary James is the count column situated in the 'Track event info' window?
I can't seem to find it.

Gary,
When I hover the cursor over the item count, it seems to crash Vegas 13 every time.

"Gary James is the count column situated in the 'Track event info' window?"

This isn't a column. It's the small label just above and to the left of the main display grid. Just hover the mouse over it.

Bob. Are you seeing an error message when you say it crashes Vegas 13? In what manner does it crash the program?

Upon placing the cursor over the item count, I get the circular 'busy' cursor, the screen then lightens with a message box saying that Vegas had stopped working and Windows is looking for a solution. Eventually the message box changes to something like ...it will close the program and notify me if a solution is found. I hit OK and Vegas closes. The other functions that I use in TLT seem to work fine.

Bob, I've made a couple of small changes to the way I'm refreshing the Time length information in the popup window. Could you give this a try in SVP-13?

This version in downloaded from my Dropbox drive.

Gary,
That seemed to clear up my problem. Thanks. I wonder why I seem to be the only person who experienced this. Oh, well, it works great.

Bob, I've incorporated this change into a new release. Timeline Tools v1.0.58 is now available on my web site.

Gary James,

I have downloaded the version 1059, but it doesn't accurately show the total length while hovering above the use count label, all media is shown as 26 minutes.

Has something changed that I am not aware of?

Without knowing any details of your project I can't make a determination of what's happening. Keep in mind this feature displays the total length of all the media clips that are assigned to a track. It doesn't display the visual length of those clips in the timeline if you have the clips overlapped or spaced apart.
