Project, Properties and Render settings?

Vifa wrote on 2/24/2018, 6:06 AM

Hi,

I'm a bit confused about all the settings in Vegas Pro - and I hope some of your can help me to understand this better.

At the moment I'm making a time lapse video, and I'm a bit confused about all the settings I have to choose.

When I first import my image sequence into Vegas I'm presented with this dialogue:

Should I choose 25fps or 50fps in this dialogue?

Pal or Double Pal? - I'm living in Europe btw.

Then there is my Project Properties.

Which frame rate should I choose for my project? Pal or Double Pal? And should it match my imported media?

And then I get confused when it's time to render my time lapse.

Should I choose Pal or Double Pal here as well?

And furthermore, from other software I have used before I have been used to use the H.264 codec to render with. Doesn't Vegas have the H.264 codec?

I hope you will take the time to help me with my rookie questions regarding Vegas.

Thank you for your time.

Best Regards

Vifa

The standard PAL framerate is 25fps, which is sufficient to set for your project.

You're importing an Image sequence from an DSLR with a resolution of 4000x3000 4:3. I suppose you want export H.264 file with a 1920x1080 16:9. For this you can use the SAVC codec or the MCAVC codec which are both h.264.

Is your footage 50p or 25p footage? That is the first question to ask. Typically you set the project settings in line with what your footage is.

Desktop: PC AMD 3960X, 24x3,8 Mhz * RTX 3080 Ti (12 GB)* Blackmagic Extreme 4K 12G * QNAP Max8 10 Gb Lan * Resolve Studio 18 * Edius X* Blackmagic Pocket 6K/6K Pro, EVA1, FS7

Laptop: ProArt Studiobook 16 OLED * internal HDR preview * i9 12900H with i-GPU Iris XE * 32 GB Ram) * Geforce RTX 3070 TI 8GB * internal HDR preview on the laptop monitor * Blackmagic Ultrastudio 4K mini

HDR monitor: ProArt Monitor PA32 UCG-K 1600 nits, Atomos Sumo

Others: Edius NX (Canopus NX)-card in an old XP-System. Edius 4.6 and other systems

Wolfgang, the footage is from a DSLR, just single images from a timelapse, (which could be 1 fps or even 1 fpm) and that imported as an image sequence into Vegas. You decide in the projectsettings the desired framerate not the footage.

if my main output is FHD PAL /25, then this is what i would set my project to. ideally closely matching the codecs to avoid transcoding. I sometimes capture 50p or 100p source if I want to slow things down, or 4K if I want to zoom/ reframe in post. But timelapse should best be done in cam with output similar to delivery format in mind (pal, ntsc....) unfortunately for pal, this is where sony alpha fails big time...

my current Win10/64 system (latest drivers, water cooled) :

Intel Coffee Lake i5 Hexacore (unlocked, but not overclocked) 4.0 GHz on Z370 chipset board,

Intel 600series 512GB M.2 SSD system drive running Win10/64 home automatic driver updates,

Crucial BX500 1TB EDIT 3D NAND SATA 2.5-inch SSD

2x 4TB 7200RPM NAS HGST data drive,

Intel HD630 iGPU - currently disabled in Bios,

nVidia GTX1060 6GB, always on latest [creator] drivers. nVidia HW acceleration enabled.

Depends on what your goal is, if you want to stretch the imported file on the timeline than I should import at 50p and use it in a 25p project. You can also import at 25 p but when you stretch on the timeline the program has to make itself the extra frames.

It's not so important which projectsettings you choose but if you use in that project a lot of titles and mediagenerators, it is better to choose a projectsetting equal to your rendersetting

Should I choose Pal or Double Pal here as well?

That's your choise, with me I let the goal for the exportfile decide my rendersettings.

And furthermore, from other software I have used before I have been used to use the H.264 codec to render with. Doesn't Vegas have the H.264 codec?

I see you use Vegas 15 , that one has more H.264 codecs to render to from which the most used are these

Please explain in VP15, HOW did you get the Main Concept AVC rendering option?

I had it in VP 13, but it does NOT show up in VP15 (all three updates).

Thanks.

In VP15 Mainconcept AVC was substituted by Magix AVC.

You can enable the Mainconcept AVC using advanced options (press 'Shift' key when clicking 'Preferences', go to tab 'Internal', search for 'Mainconcept', change 'FALSE' to 'TRUE' and restart Vegas) , however they are very similar in quality (both rubbish in my taste).

You have a lot more templates than I do?

Thank-you! I'm very interested to know what you recommend in place of both Magix and Mainconcept's AVC?

Even SonyAVC is better in my tests for 1080. However, the SonyAVC's bitrate is quite limited and you cannot use it with 32-bit pixel format projects (it's buggy in VP15, fine in VP13 and below).

Anyway, I'm only do final mp4 renders using x264 through Debugmode Frameserver and MeGUI (workflow described in FAQ). The first setup could be a bit complicated.
