Project properties vs render properties

Am I the only one who's baffled by this? I found the program's documentation to be somewhat pathetic in this area...

Are the project properties to be set to the actual characteristics of the source footage? (what if using mixed sources?) OR are the properties to be set to what you'll most likely render out to later?

I've had good results with Vegas, but an awful lot of trial-and-error has been going on. -I make 10s test-renderings with various parameters changed and finally crunch out a final version with the settings I liked best (READ- I don't know what I'm doing... -er, well, I have a clue but still feel like I don't know enough...)

Cheers

In my opinion you're ahead of the curve, testing anything is for sure the best way to avoid nasty surprises.

Vegas reads the media properties to determine how to handle the media. Sometimes the correct data isn't there or Vegas gets it wrong. If you think something funky is happening check the media properties.

The project properties determine how Vegas does some of it's internal processing. Ones to watch for; De-interlaced Method, Field Order and under Audio, Resample Quality. The others don't seem to affect the rendered output but will affect how you view / hear what you're working on.

The settings used for rendering are fairly self explainatory.

I've probably missed something so wait for others to chime in.

Generated media or text will be generated at the project properties size. If the project is 720x480 and you decide to render a version at 1920x1080, the generated media will be upscaled from 720x480 upon render. This can make the text look pretty fuzzy. Generally, I set the project properties at the start to the highest resolution of any render I might do later.

Is that why when you Right-click on a video track and select Properties there are 3 options for re-sampling?
Automatic, resample, no resample & force re-sampling (maybe slightly different wording).
Not at the computer right now.
Only guessing but I would think this is related when working with media that has different properties.
