Project reverting to older version after reboot

Bobby-Duke wrote on 1/16/2023, 3:37 PM

Hey there! So I was editing a video and making good progress when my computer suggested I update and restart. So I closed my current Vegas 18 project, updated and restarted the computer. When I opened the project again, it opened a version of the project that was several days old. Also, it did not delete any footage, or the associated Vegas files that were created when editing on the current version. That footage didn't even exist three days ago so I know not all of the information from the current edit has been lost at least. I am trying to figure out what may have happened, and also recover the current saved edit I was working on. Unfortunately, I had not set up the automatic backup, but I am obsessive about saving projects and know I saved it before rebooting the computer. Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I really don't want to have to go back and redo 3 days worth of editing. Thanks!

Have you checked the folder to which your project .veg files are being saved to see if the most recent project file is there? Or maybe there is a .veg.bak project file that was saved just before you updated your computer. If so, just delete '.bak' and open it in Vegas Pro to see if that contains your recent work.

Two suggestions to avoid future difficulties:

  • Regularly update the project name when saving. For example, projectname v1.veg, projectname - v2.veg, etc
  • Backup project .veg files to another destination such as an external drive/memory card/stick or to the cloud such as OneDrive. If the comoputer fails and there's no .veg backup saved elsewhere, then its start the project anew.

I have done all of that and there doesn't seem to be a current saved version. I have since enabled the periodic backup and periodic save so this doesn't happen in the future. One thing I find strange is all of the footage and corresponding Vegas edit files (for the current edit) are still in the project folder. That should mean that all of the information pertaining to the edits I've done still remains?

They are two separate things really. Any files that you've added to the folders on your computer's drives - whether for Vegas Pro or not - should still be there unless there has been a drive failure. What appears to have happened here is that the .veg project file has failed to save for some unknown reason. At least it didn't corrupt on saving because that would have corrupted the .veg file that did eventually open.

One other thing to check: In Vegas Pro with the project open, check File/Save As to make sure that saves are going to the folder that they should be going to. If the save folder has changed for some reason, the save just before updating the computer might be on another folder.

Right, but I'm referring to the files that are generated (by Vegas) when you import footage into the timeline. It looks like a dog-eared page that always appears next to the footage after you've edited it. All of those Vegas generated files are still there. Even with the footage that didn't exist three days ago.

None of that footage were the corresponding Vegas files existed compared to the version of my edit that is now loading when I open the project. Maybe I just have the wrong idea about what those pages do. Aren't they information generated by Vegas corresponding to whatever edits have been done to the footage? If so, wouldn't that mean the information from the edits I have done is still there in some capacity?

@Bobby-Duke The Vegas generated files are "sfk"? These are waveform files for displaying a files audio waveform on your timeline.

They have no connection with Edit information which is in your project "veg" files. Try searching your pc for all your veg files in case you accidentally saved somewhere unusual. That's assuming you did actually save before restarting.

Otherwise it appears Windows may have wiped your last saved file. If so you need to find your last veg.bak file to continue with your project. Dexcon gave you instructions for how to use the bak file.
