Project video settings for slideshow

Hello,
I am editing a slideshow on VMS Platinum 9, with pictures coming from a 10 MP D-SLR. No other source media on the timeline.
I resized all pics to fit in 1900x1200 px before importing into VMS: smaller than orig size to avoid performance overhead, and larger than HDV to allow zooming in without quality loss.
I need to output both to HDV tape (for future Blue-Ray authoring) and to PAL SD-DVD.
During editing, the project video properties were set to HDV 1080-50i , Full-resolution rendering quality=best and Deinterlace method=blend fields.

Since the pictures are progressive "by nature", what is the project's field order setting that should yield the best output quality, for HDV (Print to HDV tape) as well as for SD-MPEG2 (render as PAL DVD Architect Widescreen video stream or frameserve to external encoder via Avisynth)?

Many thanks,
Thomas

TCProdStudio, this relates directly to my question, I would like to supplement your question..

When adding video clips to the slideshow, what characeristics should the clips be rendered with to get consistent output?

I combined 2848x2134 pics, 1440x1080 clips and 1920x1080 clips together as my "final project." My preferences are set to 1920x1080 - stretch to fit is checked when rendering. I expected VMS to make adjustements to each event to have the output be 1920x1080. What I got was some letterboxes on the sides, some at the top and some with no letterboxes. How does VMS decide how to render each event?

MalibuDave, I'm afraid I don't know how VMS treats events with different formats when rendering. You could maybe try without the 1440x1080 clips (these are namely the only ones that need to be enlarged)...

My question was not about *rendering format* but rather about *project* video settings that should be used when editing only JPEG images, and especially the field order.
Let's consider only outputting to HDV tape. I'm not sure what impact project video settings have on final rendering... JPEGs get imported into the project as progressive source, what happens when I apply pan/zoom?
At what stage will VMS need to interlace to create an HDV 1080-50i stream? What's the consequence of setting the project video field order to "progressive scan" against leaving it "Upper field first" (HDV template)?
