projects getting lost

I must be missing something when setting up a new project. I think it is going to a certain outboard drive location and file, but when I close and then try to go find it, a gray box comes up that says "The following file could not be found in the specified location". When I go to where I thought I saved it and click on it, the same box appears again. Sometimes it says I saved it as some jpg I was using in the video. Anyone else have this problem? If I failed to check the box on set up for "Manage project files" could this be the problem?

Have you tried checking Manage Project Files to see if it makes a difference?

Also, are you saving your files to an external hard drive? That, too, can cause some problems if your system isn't properly mapped.

At the advice of a trusted professional old friend who uses Vegas daily, I save to a specific location on an outboard drive. But even in the past when I let it save where it wanted to, it does this. And yes, I have tried checking the "manage files" box, but that only seems to create a folder for the file instead of just placing the .vf in the file I direct it to. Here are a few other oddities...

It does not screw up until I close it for about six hours. Then it gets lost. It will work for hours just fine even if I close the program or shut off the computer. So when all looks good, I go ahead and start a project. Six hours later, I go to sleep only to wake up and find it gone... AGAIN. This is just killing me.

When I try to use the gray Vegas suggestion box to "look in another location" and then direct it to that exact location, it shows the folder empty when I get there. When I go to that folder without being within the gray Vegas box, the file is sitting right where I told it to be. The folder is not empty. Even the preferences under the Properties button show it to be where I told it to be. (Project, Properties, Video, Folders... )

When I try to open it up, a gray box appears that says the file could not be found in the specified location. And then it names that location as the last jpg file I pulled into the project the day before. Why would it be looking for a jpg on my C drive when none of that is relative to the project?

I have screen saves of this, but I can't post them here.

Is your drive letter of your external drive changing between uses?

No, it is not changing. I think I was misdiagnosing the problem though. So let me end this post and repost the new problem. It has to do with pictures in my timeline going "offline"...

I will post that now. Thanks.
