Noise Gate first mate, no point compressing a signal first (and thereby reducing it's dynamic range) because it will bring up the level of the background noise. (well, depending how severe your threshold is set)...
Renbass is working wonders on the sqashed mutimedia voice track but I still am not sure if its in the right part of the chain...also not sure if the settings are right
im just going by ear for now. I have not been able to find much info on this anywhere.
I do voice work for a living and here is my chain:
1. On the way into Soundforge/Vegas - Rode NTV tube condensor->Mindprint Envoice tube voice processor (EQ/Comp)-> hard disk. With this sweet layout - usually nothing further is required.
2. If I need to clean it up noise wise or punch it a bit more - only two plugs are in my voice chain - SF Noise Gate->Waves L1
This covers everything I have ever voiced from spots to promos to narrative and everything in between. The best plugin I have found is my voice itself. If you know what to do with it when recording, there is really no need to rely on plugs for anything. My best sounding sessions are those with no almost processing and a clear, crisp read.
