Proper way to render video with 5.1 audio in Vegas Pro 23?

CyberMousey wrote on 2/6/2026, 12:48 AM

For the life of me, unless I missed something online or in the manual, I can't see to find how I render out my video with 5.1 channels of audio. I have my tracks, They are in the timeline all section out, listed correctly, channels assigned. But I do not see how to render my video with the 5.1 audio track intact. All options just push out to stereo.

Am I missing something? Can someone point me to a video or where in the manual this can be found if I missed it.

Thank you so much

Vegas Pro 23's user manual doesn't seem to nominate specific 5.1 render formats under its "Rendering your 5.1 surround project" page. I think that the only render format that renders combined video and 5.1 audio is the 'Windows Media Video V11' format:

Select any of the 5.1 templates and using the Customize button set the image size in the Video tab to your desired settings (there is a 'custom' choice in the 'Image size' field to allow custom settings to be made; set 'Pixel aspect ratio' to '1.000 (square); and set the frame rate field to the desired fps rate.

Under the Audio tab, there is a great range of preset choices for the attributes of the 5.1 audio.

Update - the 'Video for Windows' format also allows for multi-track audio rendering via custom settings.

In the Render window, Wave and Wave 64 5.1 formats are also available but they create audio only renders. Others on the forum will be better placed to suggest methods to mux the video and audio renders into the one combined media.

(According AI):

To render AVC (MP4) video with 5.1 surround sound in VEGAS Pro, use the Sony AVC/MVC encoder, select an appropriate template (e.g., Internet 1920x1080), click "Customize Template," and set the audio to 5.1 AAC. Alternatively, render video and audio separately (AC3 for audio) and combine them, as some formats downmix to stereo.
