Protection Error on Rendering

Getting "Protection Error" when rendering either mpeg or wmv files - at about 31% for both file types ... Could it be the newly installed ¤&%#"==* WIN - ServicePack2 fouling things up?
Anyother tips on making rendering more stable? Turning "stuff" off etc?

opps, I mean "Exception Error" = "Reason Unknown" message follows too.
