Providing Video Files to a Mac user

I'll be transferring a few miles of old movie film for a customer who will then do his own editing on a Mac.

I'm trying to convince him to let me provide the captures as avi files on an external drive. He will edit in iMovie and also in FCP. I've done some work for him in the past and provided the transfers on miniDV tape, but the external drive would seem to be a better option.

Can he directly import avi files into iMovie and FCP? How should his external drive be formatted - FAT32, NTFS or?

Any advice would be appreciated.

The only references I have found for iMovie are about two years old, but I'll assume that it cannnot read avi's.

The more current reference to FCP seems to indicate that recent versions can read avi's without problems. Not sure which version of FCP it has to be though.

You can always use Quicktime Pro to convert AVIs.

To keep the costs down for the customer, I'm trying to avoid having to process the files after capture.

I have one of my customer's HDDs and some film, so I'll try Vegas and maybe a few other capture utilities to see what happens.
