Besides the larger hard drive, the 80GB PS3 version:

1) is PS2 Software compatible
2) has an additional 2 USB ports (4 total)
3) has Memory Stick/SD/Compact Flash Slots (may be important for for playing HD video)
4) supports SACD

And, I don't think the 40 gig version has wireless connectivity.

Yes, the 40G version has wireless connectivity. Sony doesn't sell any PS3s that do not have wireless connectivity.

Thank ALL of you for your helpful comments. I think I will have to get the 80 gig. I was kind of hoping you would say it was the same except for the larger harddrive. I think it would be better to bite the bullet and pay the extra $. thanks again Roger :o)

Hello Roger, you say that you intend to use it to play AVCHD and Blu-Ray disks. For that purpose there is no difference at all. What you have to ask is the following:

1/ Do I intend to play Playstation 2 games?

If the answer to that question is "No", then the 40G is fine. Sure, it has two less USB ports, but why does that matter? Are you going to connect more than two USB hard drives to it?

I agree. For $100 more why get the 80GB version if you don't need backwards compatibility? The 40GB will play the content you described just fine.

You might get a better idea from reading customer reviews at Amazon.com. In the past few years I have read them pretty much before I buy anything.
