New tool was posted today in Tools section on videohelp.com website. It is called:

PS3 Media Server: http://www.videohelp.com/tools/PS3_Media_Server

It is free, does not require any installation, just double click .exe file.
I tried it. It works great, and cannot be easier than that.
I am running PS3 Media Server on two PCs and PS3 can see both.

If you've tried it, how does it compare to TwonkyMedia?

I didn't try TwonkyMedia, and I didn't try TVersity. I tried Nero MediaHome, RedKawa File Server, Windows Media Player 11, I even tried IIS solution. I had problems with all those.
With PS3 Media Server set up was done within a minute.

Here is info:

PS3 Media Server is a DLNA compliant UPNP Media Server for the PS3, written in Java, with the purpose of streaming or transcoding any kind of media files, with minimum configuration. It’s backed up with the powerful Mplayer/FFmpeg packages.

PS3 Media Server features:

* Ready to launch and play. No codec packs to install. No folder configuration and pre-parsing or this kind of annoying thing. All your folders are directly browsed by the PS3, there’s an automatic refresh also.
* Real-time video transcoding via MEncoder, tsMuxer or Avisynth.
* DVD ISOs images / VIDEO_TS Folder transcoder.
* OGG/FLAC/MPC/APE audio transcoding.
* Thumbnail generation for Videos.
* You can choose with a virtual folder system your audio/subtitle language on the PS3!
* All formats PS3 natively supports: MP3/WMA, JPG/PNG/GIF/TIFF, and all kind of videos (AVI, MP4, TS, M2TS, MPEG) the ps3 is willing to play.
* ZIP/RAR files as browsable folders for pictures/audio files.
* Preliminary support for pictures based feeds, such as Flickr and Picasaweb.
* Preliminary Internet TV / Web Radio support with VLC, MEncoder or MPlayer.

Windows only:

* Lossless 5.1 PCM transcoding with DTS movies.

Ed even says it streams MKV’s with ease.

Here is couple of the comments from that site:

"Great program works with all videos i have (anime movies etc.) easy to use. this is way better than nero and tversity."

"OMG this program is AWESOME. Finally I can share my Linux desktop music and movies with my PS3 perfectly! Other programs simply didn’t work very well… but this… oh boy… perfect! I’ve also donated to the project… he/she/they deserve it!! Thanks a lot!"

I'll give it a whirl. I've tried everything else (with limited success) and am at my wit's end. If this works, you will be my hero.

Just tried it on Vista 64. Works quite well.

Wow. Finally a media server that just works. I'm impressed so far. I wish it just transcoded instead of creating a separate transcoded folder to navigate but I can live with that. All you PS3 users that have been looking for something easier...this is it.

I'll answer my own question about PS3 Media Server vs. TwonkyMedia.

PS3 Media Server is far superior. Much better transcoding and the simple, no questions asked access to all folders on all drives is a dream. No setting up special folders that can accessed by the PS3. PS3 Media Server can see everything and play most of it.

Very nice. Thanks for the tip.
