PTT problems

doboyd wrote on 11/10/2002, 9:52 PM
I have a ADVC 100, and I just tried my first PTT from Vidcap 3. The video drops out randomly (previewing on TV using preview on device button) while previewing, TV screen just goes black for a sec or less. Tried rendered file and original capture clip. My PC has a Asus A7M266 motherboard, 2000XP AMD
cpu, Win XP pro, 768 DDR RAM, 30G HDD ATA100 7200 rpm DMA enabled (mode 5 I think) for OS and apps, an 80G HDD as above for capture etc.

I got around this by PTT from the timeline (opened new rendered file in new project), Vegas prerendered etc then printed to
tape, working so far (I'm watching). I think the prerendered file would be on C: by default, so I don't know if this is related to
the problem Sab mentioned in this thread earlier. I did not actually print to VHS tape as intended to see if the drop outs were in
preview only (but should not do this anyway).

I have disabled my network connection.

I have to try :
1. disable 1394 network connection
2. disable auto protect on Nortons System Works (antivirus)
3. try vicap PTT with file on another drive or folder?
4. another firewire card (using an Creative Audigy DE sound card with 1394 port to ADVC)
5. try to PTT from vidcap through/to my JVC camera (not use the ADVC100)
6. Anyone else have any suggestions??

I can capture analogue fine, no dropped frames. I have only captured DV from my camera.

I just tried all the above, no good, still dropping out, even when recording to VCR through ADVC100. Tried using DV camera as passthrough device, no problem. Tried Video Factory 2c on a different PC (AMD 1.2GHz cpu, A7Pro MB, 512MB sdram, two HDD's, one for capturing), same result through ADVC100.

Does not matter where the files are, either drive, still the same, OK from timeline PTT, not OK from Vidcap PTT. I want to make about 10 copies of home movie DV to VHS using the ADVC100, but if I have to use the timeline PTT it will prerender each time I record to tape (I think??).

I love using Vegas, but I now have this problem, and a mpeg2 render problem (another thread) that has pulsing for the first 30 sec or so, getting less and leass during the 30 sec. This occurs for CBR or VBR progressive SVCD PAL templates.

I am very willing to hear from anyone on these problems, its very dissapointing. Should I be contacting the support people at SF??

Thanks

I have the same trouble myself, and have yet to find a solution. I've tried many tips provided here on the forums to no avail. Does the Asus board use a VIA chipset? Many have said it has problems with VV. It seems the bus is easily taxed thus causing the dropout... Good luck, I'll be checking back to see if a "new" suggestion is offered.

The A7M266 uses an AMD 760 chip set, the A7Pro uses a Via KT133 (I think). What's your setup?? are you using an ADVC100??. I have tried various other editing software packages on the A7Pro with Video Factory, but none seem to like it. I have used DVIO, a small simple app, and it works fine. All it does is capture from Firewire and send a file to it, no control over device etc. No problems. It can't do a batch send like Vidcap, but it may have to do until i can find a solution. The only other way around it is to PTT from the time line, or use my DV camera, which is sort of a waste of the ADVC100. I'll try experimenting some more first.

FIC AZ11
AMD 1.1 gig Athlon
512megs RAM
60gig 7200rpm(ata100)OS drive
60gig 7200rpm(ata100)Media drive
After making what seemed like a mistake, I first tried the Dazzle DV bridge. Heard many bad things about it, figured it was the problem. Bought the ADVC100, and encountered the exact same trrouble. I've also tried 3 different firewire cards, removing my controller card, and various other tweaks found on this forum as well Creative Cow. It seems others are having the same trouble, in the end the common piece of info that always seems to come out is the VIA chipset. I'm somewhat spent on dough at the moment, so I'll have to wait to upgrade my Mobo. It only affects my print to tape, if I take VV to any other format it comes out just fine. I really like the program and all that it can do...

I just had the same problem. ADVC-100 drop out when PTT. JVC camera would pass through ok but not PTT. The problem was my 1394 capture card. I had a Unibrain card that didn't match up with new equipment.I also have a VIA chip set and looked at many articles. The solution seem to be the drivers that the capture board used. After replacement along with a different drive the problem was gone. See my previous Print to tape fixed!! with username whbl173. Just another 35.00 and on my way to creating instead of troubleshooting. Good luck

Unfortunately, my primary PC is the A7M266 which uses AMD761 chipset. All articles indicate none of the VIA updates are designed for this chipset or even if this chipset has a problem. It certainly works fine other than the PTT ONLY through Vidcap, PTT from the timeline appears fine, no problem.

Also, capturing through the ADVC100 is fine, so I don't understand the difference in resources required for PTT vs capturing, and why only PTT from Vidcap has a problem.

Also, using my DV camera, PTT from Vidcap is fine. So..., I have conflicting symptoms:
The ADVC seems OK,as using DVIO utility, no problem transferring DV back through the ADVC100, PTT from timeline OK.

Capturing analogue from ADVC100 OK, have not tried DV.

Because of the above results, the Firewire card and PC resuorces appear to be able to handle the job.

Vidcap works OK with PTT through DV camera, captures from DV camera.

Unfortunately, VV3 is a common factor, as I explained in previous posts, the sluggish response with vidcap and the ADVC100, but OK with the camera, but also, IuVCR capture program is OK with the ADVC100, as is Ulead DVD Movie factory. Only Vegas has issues.

I really like this program, but i seem to be having all sorts of problems with output, as I said before, mpeg2 encoding to PAL SVCD, and now this. The only response sto both programs, along with some helpfl advice, have echoed my problems, and have no resolution, nor any response from SF.

I will keep trying so, I would sytill appreciate any help, thoughts or suggestions.

I propose next to install my firewire card in my wifes's P3 800 PC and see what happens with Vegas or Video Factory. Hopefully this will point me in the direction of a faulty ADVC100, hardware incompatibility (AMD etc?), or SF software.

Well, I have now tried the same generic firewire card in my wife's P3 800 (Intel DB815EE 512M Ram)and installed VF2. It responds perfectly, no Vidcap PTT problems or drop outs, and the capture response with the ADVC100 is only slightly slow, ever so slightly. I can only conclude that even the A7M266 MB with the AMD 761 chipset also has issues with something!?

I did not wwant to have to upgrade my MB, but it looks like i will have to get a P4 2.5GHz and another MB (Intel chipset).

Does anyone else have any experiences with AMD CPU's and the A7M266 motherboard???

Interesting... I'm always glad to hear input regarding this issue. All that I have read and now your info as well seems to point in the direction of a trip back to Intel. Good luck with your future hardware...

Well, I just tried another test. I took the generic firewire (ST labs) card and put in my A7M266 PC, taking out the Audigy sound/1394 card. I enabled the on board sound, disabled com 2 to try and free some IRQ's, restarted, and although everything is back on IRQ9, PTT from Vidcap is now working, no dropouts. Response when capturing through the ADVC100 is still a little sluggish, but no apparent problems. I don't know exactly if the Audigy card in combination with my motherboard is the problem, as it had been suggested to try and get the 1394 onto its own IRQ, but I have not beeen able to do this. So far so good, as I did not really want to buy another MB and cpu etc.

I will persist with trying to reasign IRQ's, after I complete a few home movies.
