PTT PRoblems

After ingesting as much relevant info as one could stand concerning PTT problems with VF 2.0c(125) (mine is with audio dropouts) via SF’s Knowledge Base item #1418 and the many approaches to rectifying the problem posed on this forum (discdude, you are really a remarkable tech stud) I have opted for adding an external drive (Maxtor DV5000 120G 7200rpm w/ USB & Firewire ports) to the mix. Following is my setup and I believe I have upgraded all applicable drivers, checked for obvious IRQ conflicts, DMA is on, audio preview in VF is off, and yes, I have defragged several times. Also, I’ve read all the chipset upgrade comments but haven’t gone that route…. yet. Any tips you have that can make this experience as painless as possible would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks folks….

Oh boy, oh boy. I have a similar system but am experiencing problems with PTT as well. Dell 8200, 30G, 5400, 1.5G Intel, XP Home, Belkin Firewire PCMCIA out to a Maxtor DV5000 120G 7200rpm. Canon into integral firewire, Maxtor into the Belkin card.

I can capture, render, and copy in and out from the Maxtor, but cannot PTT from it or the timeline. Have had to render to Maxtor, and send the render to temporary file on C drive to PTT successfully.

See the following from www.videoguys.com/systems.htm:

"The following list has been compiled from our own tech support experiences and direct communications with tech support from our manufacturers. This list in no way claims that the hardware listed is inferior or poor performers. In fact most of these machines are excellent computers, with proprietary subsystems that make using our cards difficult. Not every version of the machines listed is a problem. Yours may work just fine with our cards. This is more a guideline for users planning on buying a new machine for DTV.

Dell Dimensions 8200
We running into some very big technical issues with the Dell 8200 machines running under WinXP with the Nvidia graphics card currently being offered from Dell. These very same machines are working great if we substitute the graphics card with an ATI Radeon and run Win2K. We are not sure what is going on here, but we suspect it is an XP driver issue."

Hhmmmm..... the plot thickens. Thanks a pantload for the info. The DV-5000 hasn't reached me yet, should be here next week. Did you reinstall or configure VF any differently when you added the external HD? At least its good to know that for all this extra expense there is some way to get things done. At this point I can live with the work around you outlined with a temp file back to C:(no problem with disc space). Have you had any feedback directly from Dell on this? (didn't think so..).

Again, many thanks for the heads up.

JBob:
No reconfigure except for file management, eg., "Render to . . . E/DV Renders/whatever . . . My project and backup files still reside on C with the OS.

Capture and Renders are perfect out there on the Maxtor, and my wife loves the one button backup!

Re: VF configure... I was hoping you would say that! Thanks! I finally see a small light at the end of the tunnel...
