Pulling info of a dvd

I had made some dvd's of family videos and now want to take bits and pieces of those dvd's tape the info off and put them all on one dvd. What is the best way to do this.
I normally take the info off by using vegas 7.0, putting into the timelime, rerender it as an avi, then rerend it again to mpeg, then importing it into DVD Arch. This doesn't seem right.

Are you still using Vegas 7 or are you using Vegas 8 yet? If you are using Vegas 8, you can probably get away with just editing the MPEG2 file in Vegas and rendering it back to MPEG2 without ever converting it to AVI. Do a search of this form for "smart-render" for details on how. There's been a good discussion on it in the last few months.

If you're still on Vegas 7 and want to avoid the MPEG2->AVI->MPEG2 workflow, then I'd recommend you use something other than Vegas. Womble makes a couple good products for editing MPEG files, and I've heard good things about VideoReDo as well.

The best tool for this is VideoReDo TVSuite http://www.videoredo.com/en/index.htm

Get the free trial, make sure to get the free trial key to fully enable the app. You can open your existing DVDs, edit them, and burn them to DVD with no recoding [except a few frames around cuts when they're not on I-frames] without leaving VRDTVS.

I've been using Vegas for years, but for quick and frame accurate editing of mpegs [cuts only] nothing beats VideoReDo.

I put the VOBs on the Vegas timeline, just like you and edit.

However, I then Save As and save a text EDL. I then use the little Womble utility that converts that to a Womble file and then let Womble do the actual lossless and almost instantaneous cuts.

Finally, I just read in EventDV magazine about this utility:

Cinematize 2 Pro

I haven't used it yet (just read about it today). Looks like it could do all sorts of interesting things, including letting you re-use some of your menus.

Bear in mind that a smart render doesn't work for low bitrate MPEG files. 19, 25, 35, 50Mbps are smart-render formats.
I like the Womble tools for quick, easy jobs too.
