It comes in with the timecode embedded in it so I'm not sure what you're asking.

I guess what i'm wondering is how do i find those numbers on the file. In other words if someone started shooting video on a mini dv tape with the timecode starting at 12 hours 25 min and 10 sec, how can i see these times reflected on or within the file?

Add the timecode FX to the file before you add it to the timeline,
That way, it shows source TC as opposed to timeline TC.

I forgot to mention that you can also use the Add/Remove Timecode FX scripts.
This will add source TC to a clip that's already on the timeline.

You don't need to go to this much trouble if you simply want to see what the source TC is. Just enable it, look in the Options for the Show TC in Thumbnails tick box.
