Purchasing the DV500 Plus Package

I have been going back and forth in my head about which way to go as I get into DTV. I've read and heard reviews that go both ways.

I think I am leaning a little towards the DV500. Can anyone give me any REAL reason to reconsider and select VV?

The biggest argument for going with DV500 plus or any hardware capture card is "real time" rendering.

Premiere must render the timeline for you to see the results of effects and transitions. This makes using it very frustrating if you don't have a "real time" card.

Vegas on the other hand does not require you to render a video to see your transitions or effects. Vegas shows the changes in real time. The quality of the preview will not be as good as that of a real time card, but it does it in the software with no extra card required.

One thing to point out (im not an expert but...): If you don't already have a decent computer and ATA 33/66/100 EIDE or SCSI drives you will still be dealing with dropouts and rendering problems even wth a real time card like the DV500 plus.

If you have a fast computer with fast hard drives and Vegas Video you can do great video work. The only capture card necessary is an OCHI compliant FireWire card.

I think as Vegas matures and MS improves the video technology in windows you will see Vegas move to the top of the DV NLE market.

I've been going through the same decision process as Jinx, and did setmy sights on VV definitely. The problem with any Premiere-based system is the need to get a plug-in before you can scratch your arm, or another to scratch your nose, still another to scratch your But I'm getting off track here. Maybe at this time the more advanced functions are a bit smoother going on a P6.0 system but the overall functionality of VV 2.x seems to be far superior. As mentioned, as the software matures in future versions (when WILL the next one come, and will it be a v3.0 or another 2.x??) this should turn into a top package. It's certainly a lot easier to get started with than the Adobe bundles. And, Sonic Foundry has a lot riding on this, it seems, so I have a feeling they won't let it go bad. They've certainly set a precedent with Acid and Forge.
