Quake Script / Earthquake Motion Tools

JoeO wrote on 4/18/2008, 9:27 PM
Hello All,

Does anyone know of a usefull tool to add an earthquake / camera shake effect in Vegas 8. I noticed some had success installing the "Quake for Vegas 5" script into 7 without problems (Grazie). Does it create problems in 8. I know there is software from NewBlue that has a very nice earthquake motion effect, but I can't spend $140 on my son's school project.

Thanks,

Joe

Y'know, this is quite easy to do within Pan/Crop. OK, you don't have a nice GUI front end and so on, but there WAS life before scripts came along - y'know? In any event, just how much of this "quaking" do you want to get done?

As of yet I have STILL failed to be able to install the VegasQuake script for VPro8.

Just to add to Grazie's excellent suggestions.
Don't forget you can add some Motion Blur (it's an envelope on the Video Buss) or even some Gaussian Blur to simulate the camera loosing focus. Add those after you've done the pan/crop or you'll go nuts as they're CPU hogs.

One thing I haven't tried but might be worth a shot. Render your scene to really low bit rate mpeg-2 to induce some macroblocking and bring that back into your project.

Bob.

Oh yes! Bob's spot-on idea for MBlur too. Do it . .and you'll think you're THERE!!! Don't forget some audio rumbling.

Thanks all. Pan Crop is what we put in the project and it eneded up looking just fine. I may add some motion blur and see how it looks. I was looking for the quake effect to help my Son set up the project the way he originally intended. I had him just copy and paste many keyframe points in pan crop to get a cell phone to dance. He Son is 16 and ended up with a pretty good looking concept for a high school prooject. Once we get it rendered I will post a link.

I downloaded the trial version of the NewBlue Motion Effects Pack. It really is a great tool but the watermark is just to big.

Thanks again for the response.

Google "Sony Vegas Quake" - it will take you to the VASST link page.

If you want to save doing this in post, try what Paramount did on the set of Top Gun. For the flying scenes they added shake by attaching a drill (with an out of balance weight as a bit) to the camera mount and ran it while filming. You can check it out in the extras on the Special Edition DVD.

Ah, but how do you do the "trapezoid" effect in vegas without 3D? My hotel room walls became trapezoid shaped during the 7.3 Landers quake, glad it didn't come down on my head!

Is the scene indoors or outdoors? Consider some "rotation" angles in there if you haven't already.

There is a shake script that comes free with the excellent Mercali deshaking script. I haven't tried it, but if it's anywhere near as good as Mercali it should be really good.

Download the Quake script from the VASST website.

This contains instructions on how to install it under V6, and the same procedure will also work for V7 where Quake works fine.

Mark

PS. Sadly, if you do the same thing under V8Pro it appears to be installed OK but when you try to run it you get an error referring to a missing message. This often means that something is referencing the wrong version of a DLL file somewhere, though I'm not able to tell exactly what the root cause is.Probably the way this could be solved would be for the VegasQuake.dll to be recompiled to suit V8Pro, but unfortunately the author of Quake, Roger Magnusson, no longer seems to be around and I don't suppose anyone else would be able to reverse-engineer it in order to fix it for V8Pro. But it works just fine in every version from V4 up to V7.

Yup. Been my experience too Mark.

Just get New Blue Active Camera and be done with it. While the Quake Script was great, Roger has abandoned it so it is not available for Vegas 8. Supporting plug-in developers helps us write more great plug-ins. While I understand that it's always great to get something for free, New Blue Active Camera is an excellent plug-in and IMHO, worth the money. (it's an ecosystem folks, if you want the plug-ins to grow you have to water the developers) ;-)

If you can't get the zipfile from VASST, let me know your email address and I'll email it to you.
