Quality loss ??

I would please like to know the following:-

Is there a quality loss if I render a edited clip and then re-edit it then print to tape ?

Also on the preview some of the night shots are darker then the original video, However when I view the edited printed tape on my camera, the night shots are the same as the original i.e. lighter.

Is there a setting whereby the preview shows the same brightness as original video?

Yes, there will be a quality loss, but not enough to worry about. Various tests have shown that if you use the new Sonic Foundry DV codec, you should be able to re-render 50 times or so before noticing any problems. Re-rendering once or twice isn't anything to worry about.

The video monitor on your computer is going to show shading differently than the LCD screen on the camera or the television. A simple method for dealing with this is to ignore it if you know that people are going to be watching a printed tape (as compared to a .WMV file), and you are making no brightness & contrast changes. What gets printed back to tape will look the same as the original. If you need to get a more accurate idea of what the image will look like while editing, you can use the external preview through the 1394 port back to your camera. This will let you preview your project from the timeline and see it on your camera's LCD panel or an external television.
