Quality VBR for mp4?

Hey guys, my usual render settings involve rendering in .wmv in the Quality VBR setting. The reason I go for this is because I don't have to calculate/estimate the correct bitrate. Instead I just set the quality I want as a percentage and vegas calculates the right bitrate for me, which is much easier.

I have heard, however, that .mp4 is the better file type to be rendering due to the use of the H.264 codec being used (which is more efficient on quality vs file size).

Is there a way of rendering in .mp4 with H.264 using a method like Quality VBR so that I don't have to estimate a good bitrate?

I would try rendering to xdcam-ex, then use handbrake to convert to h.264. That should keep it simple enough. If you are going to youtube, upload the xdcam directly.

Vegas does not have a quality-metric h264 encoder.
That's pretty much the domain of x264 codec used in Handbrake and several others.
Does a really good job of putting the bits where they'll do the most good; sometimes some issues with shadows and grainy source.
