24p video encoded to MPEG-2 using the TFF/RFF pulldown flags uses 20% fewer bits to encode compared to the same video encoded as 60i with pulldown rendered in the frames. Not only is it a more efficient use of bits (which can then be used for more content or higher bitrates / higher quality) it is also easier for so-called progressive DVD players to decode for progressive outputs. And, it's still compatible with standard interlaced players. It should only be used for 24p projects, though. If your source material is 60i, use the regular templates.
