Question on "Save snapshot to file" resolution

I have the project size set to HDV 1080-60i (1440x1080);
The media is an m2t clip; properties are 1440x1080, pixel aspect 1.3333 (HDV 1080)

Video Preview is set to “Best,” “Full.”
In the video preview window it says Project: 1440x1080, Preview: 1440x1080, Display: 1920x1080.
When I “Save snapshop to file,” the resulting jpeg image is 1920x1080.

My questions is, why is the “Display” (and the captured still image) 1920x1080, rather than 1440x1080?

Because it saved the snapshot as square pixels.

HDV is 1440x1080, but the pixel aspect ratio is 1.333. If you multiply 1440 by 1.333, you get 1920.

So, the square-pixel (PAR 1.0000) equivalent is 1920x1080. That's what the preview displays, so that's what you get.

If you WANT it to be saved as 1440x1080, then right-click on the preview window and uncheck "simulate device aspect ratio." But then the picture will be horizontally squeezed.

What size Photoshop Documents are you using for Graphics in HDV projects that are 1440x1080

David covered it, but here's another explanation.

Vegas grabs stills from the preview window frame buffer. Technically it's not extracting a still from the media file itself. This makes sense when you consider that this approach allows you to get a shot of whatever fancy multilayered composition you happen to have the play head parked on.

If your preview window is set at half size, you'll get a half sized still capture. If it's set to Draft, you'll get a draft quality capture. And if it's set to Simulate Device Aspect Ratio then that's what it'll capture.
